UTMB Galveston/TTUHSC/UTHSCSA

Post by Lonest4r »

I just interviewed for medical school in Galveston this past Friday and am really excited at the possibility of making it my home, for the next 4 years at least. The program and people were excellent and the location wasn't bad either(barring a large hurricane). I have also interviewed in San Antonio and Lubbock, but Galveston is the place that has really peaked my interest. Once I find out where I am going, I would like to meet some local forum members to get acquainted and learn about local ranges and retailers. If y'all feel inclined I could definitely use some prayers to calm my anxious spirit. The process is a whole lot of hurry up and wait at this point, and I could be receiving pre-match offers from the schools at which I interviewed any day. If nothing else shoot me a PM if you are from one of these areas and wouldn't mind sharing some of your likes/dislikes about these cities. Thanks :txflag:

Congratulations. Send me a PM if you're interested in meeting.

I may be annoying and give some people high blood pressure, but I am a member of the Galveston Rifle and Pistol Club and can show you around there.

Congrats

hmmm

Lubbock has wonderful people and lots of dirt in the air and a a really long drive to kayak/fish, but wonderful mostly conservative people

San Antonio has the best Korean Restaurants, but the one in Lubbock is good too.
San Antonio, like Houston and Austin, "used to be" a good place to live, but it grew.

Galveston's humidity makes people look young longer without needing moisturizers, so they are less wrinkly when they age, and so I look younger than I am ...that's why I can tell my niece about the 20 year old girls who still chase me
(Of course they used to chase after me, now they chase me away, but ....)
Galveston's humidity makes it feel hotter and colder at first ... but you get used to it. ... I miss being close to it, you'll like it.

Congrats. As someone married to a medical student, may I offer some advice?

These next 6 months: RELAX. Have a blast. Take some random road trips. Do anything and everything you can think of that sounds fun.

Don't start stressing before you even get there. Don't start studying before you even step into the classroom.

Enjoy this time off. Its the last you're going to get for a while. :tiphat:

Oh, BTW, rent tends to be outrageous here; and you can't just look for an apartment in August and expect to move in September 1. Also parking at UTMB is not cheap. It's something like $200 or 300 per year.

UTMB probably has some kind of orientation information that would be helpful. I wouldn't know. My wife worked there in the 1990s, but that is ancient history.

Or maybe you're wealthy and can buy a condo within walking distance. ;-)

Congratulations! I am envious. :tiphat:

Take SeamusTx up on his offer. He's not half as bad as he seems on the forum.

... and don't worry about the humidity in Galveston. You won't be outside long enough to notice.

Have fun and good luck! My wife just started 3rd year and is enjoying being in a clinical setting, but actually says she misses studying. I don't understand that sentiment at all!

I guess maybe that's why she's in med school and I'm not. "rlol"
