Re: Kindle for PC
Looks like you made your decision, but here are a couple more pennies:
I have Kindle for PC on a desktop and on a Notebook computer, for my iPhone, and a Kindle Touch that wife got me for Christmas.
I find basic reading on all of them acceptable, but strangely enought I like the iPhone app a lot more than I thought I would.
The Kindle for PC desktop version is best for books that have diagrams in color, because of the size of the monitor. The notebook does OK, just not as large. The Kindle Touch is OK for straight reading, but complex diagrams, large photos, and visual stuff in color does not come out well on it. I bought an ebook on Gettysburg that features a lot of color maps for explanation, and it is hard to figure them out on the Kindle Touch.
If I was going to get a Kindle for reading technical/academic books that have diagrams and such, I would spring for the larger color version, the Kindle Fire.
Others have noted the advantages of the original hardbacked textbook, such as weighing down the back of your pickup on icy days. If it is a hefty tome, it might also serve as field expedient cover if you get an active shooter in class.
Just tryin' to help.

On both the phone app and pc app you can choose your contrast, page color, and I have found it MUCH easier than I expected to read on my phone and PC. JMPHO, YMMV

Re: Kindle for PC
I recently finished reading all 1,000+ pages of Atlas Shrugged using the kindle app on my iPad. It worked just fine for me.apostate wrote:If I tried to read all 872 pages, my eyes would be burning no matter what the medium. Re: Kindle for PC
I read novels all the time on my iPhone. Love it.
I can't stand to read an ebook on a PC - no matter the screen size.
Currently shopping for a tablet for technical books. Anything with tables or illustrations demands a tablet format. If you need to read PDFs, get a tablet.
If I were in school, a 10" tablet would be a must

Re: Kindle for PC
Though I have 'em on all my PC's, for pleasure I'm always reading on the Iphone, with either the Kindle app, or with the Overdrive app... that's the one that supports the format from our public Library, so everything there is free. The Iphone is great because it's so mobile - besides being an "instantly available" (like having a few minutes free at lunch, waiting on someone at and office or at the doctors, or waiting for the XYL while she's shopping), it'll also let me squirm around on the couch to get comfortable, in bed, etc. The PC forces me to sit upright, and that gets to be a hassle quickly, because of my back.Rex B wrote:I read novels all the time on my iPhone. I've settled on Bluefire reader for iPhone.

Re: Kindle for PC
I don't have a problem reading books on the PC, but I have been amazed at how good the screen is on the iPhone, even tho it is so small.
