How to get started in IDPA in Fort Worth
I found this link searching for "fort worth idpa". http://www.ctidpa.com/
Do I just go to the gun range on Thursday nights and walk in and tell them I'd like to try IDPA shooting?

Check out our frequently asked questions page first. http://www.ctidpa.com/faq.htm
I will be there Thursday and am happy to help get you started but reading the faq and downloading/reading the rulebook from http://idpa.com/Documents/IDPARuleBook2005.pdf BEFORE you go to a match, will be a major help to you.

I am scared of empty guns and keep mine loaded at all times. The family knows the guns are loaded and treats them with respect. Loaded guns cause few accidents; empty guns kill people every year. -Elmer Keith. 1961

Too busy?? Never too busy to help someone join the sport. Watching is boring after about 15 minutes. Bring your gun, and all the mags, gear and 100 rounds of ammo. You're gonna shoot!!

Addiction... Tell me about it.
I've only had my XD9 for one year and I have put 10,000 rounds through it already. It is my first pistol. In that same year, I ended up with three more pistols. Yea, it is addicting.
About the jacket or vest thing... can it be just a regular button up shirt over my tshirt?

Yes, an untucked Hawaiian shirt or similar is good enough. I suggest that you practice drawing a few times from whatever concealment you decide on (WITH EMPTY GUN) so you don't grab a handful of shirt when getting the gun out. Trust me, I see it happen often.propellerhead wrote:Addiction... Tell me about it.

It is a shot timer. I measures the time from the buzzer until the last shot fired. In IDPA you score is your raw time to complete the scenerio, plus adjustments for, your accuracy, plus any rule violation penalty.propellerhead wrote:What is that little box they hold over the shooter's head?
Accuracy is scored using an official IDPA target. It has 2 -0 points areas. A 6" square for the head and an 8" circle at center mass. There is a area outside the center mass area which is -1 point and another farther out which is -3 points. A miss is -5 points. Each point down represents .5 seconds added to the raw time. So if you shoot a scenerio in 15.0 seconds and shoot with only three -1 hits and two -3 hits and one miss, your points down would total -14. (3+6+5=14). This would add 7 seconds to your raw score so your score for the scenerio would be 22.0. There are "bonus' points for procedural errors, hitting non-threat targets and failure to neutralize targets, but I am sure you get the drift.
If you would like to see some action shots you can go to the following site and see Judy Goloski who was '05 and '06 Ladies IDPA champ.

To help illustrate the above paragraph, here is a representation of an IDPA target:CWOOD wrote:Accuracy is scored using an official IDPA target. It has 2 -0 points areas.
