Liberal 2nd amendment view

Post by texanjoker »

Had an interesting discussion the other day about guns with an east coast transplant. This person thinks only certain "classes" can own AR's, ect. Guns should be registered just like cars or a driver's license, ect. I bring up the 2nd amendment and the reply is that would be another discussion about the constitution as that was not part of this discussion... God forbid you have a high cap magazine, but he carries one as an 8 round mag isn't enough.......... There are too many guns out there and we need to get some back. He agreed criminals wouldn't turn in guns...that was just amazing...My point that the law abiding citizens of our great nation would get hosed was lost. A gun manufacturer is in it for the money..well I agreed with that part as that is called supply and demand.. we want guns so they make them.

Wow.....they are not done................

That is what we are up against and it is going to continue.....

It takes a special and willful kind of stupid to think like that.

(In a fit of wide-awake dreamind):

Me: "I think people who spout such nonsense should be arrested, beaten, thrown in prison without a trial where they should remain indefinitely while suffering daily beatings. Also, their wife, children, parents, and siblings should also be rounded up and suffer the same fate."

Him: "You can't do that!"

Me: "That would be another discussion about the constitution as that is not part of this discussion."

I have an acquaintance who said something similar. He was fine with people having semi-automatic rifles if it was an onerous process to obtain them to include extensive background checks, licensing, fees, registrations, etc. Him being middle-upper class had no problems with these things because he'd submit to them himself that is if he ever chose to own a semi-automatic rifle. When I inquired as to whether my M1 would be subject to the same restriction, he hesitated before delcaring that it should be. "All of them." That said, he has no problem with CHLs and doesn't think handguns should be registered or as restricted. Pointing out that more people are killed with handguns every year than rifles produced nothing fruitful in reply from him but I wonder if it planted in his head the idea that we ought to severely restrict those too?

This is an otherwise very smart person who thinks the war on drugs has been a failure because you can't keep people from buying and consuming them...why is it when guns come into the picture so many people forfeit their ability to reason?

You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink. But you can hold his head under for a bit just for the fun of it.

We are never going to sway these people. Their minds are made up & nothing is going to change them. But we can influence those that overhear the conversation. So remember to keep calm & hammer the rational points home - repeatedly.

I have a couple of friends of mine on Facebook that view guns & the 2nd amendment similar to the OP. We go round & round on this topic & it usually breaks down into them resorting to veiled name-calling & personal attacks. I don't let that stuff get to me because it's not true. They still haven't caught on to the fact that they are at a big disadvantage in all of this because I really like to debate this & related issues. I don't think that these guys will ever come around, but the ongoing debate may give others a chance to put their own thought into to matter.

TexasCajun, while it is true that you can lead a horse to water, and it is difficult to get him to drink, you can really soak his head.

Kinda like someone asked to define horticulture. You can lead a whore to a culture, but you can't make her think.
If the 2nd admendment only applies to muskets and muzzle-loaders, then the 1st admentment must apply only to the spoken or printed word. Printing must be done on hand presses, news stories must be written in longhand, no keyboards or electric processes may be used.

Had a Facebook "conversation" with a friend the other day. She insisted that the NRA was all about protecting the gun manufacturers. It was all about Big Business. The NRA was just a corporate shill gun manufacturers. sighhhh

Why do y'all bother? Do you enjoy the frustration or something? Trying to have a rational discussion at all with brain-dead liberal morons ® * is nothing but an exercise in futility.

I agree. I get less frustrated trying to teach algebra to my Labrador retreiver.

As I said, it isn't for the benefit of the one I'm having the conversation with; it's for the benefit of those who may come across the conversation by chance. That and the fact that I do like to argue the point.

Ben Franklin noted "you can reason a man out of a position that he did not reason himself into". This is the problem with arguing gun control and the second amendment with committed socialist/liberals. They are emotionally driven thinkers and no amount of logic or evidence can change their position. They "feel" the world would be safer without guns. The only thing that might change the way they "feel" is if their emotions are changed due to an external factor such as becoming a victim or standing by helpless while a loved one is victimized.

Our real mission should be to bring shooting sports and gun education to the youth of our nation so that they can grow up with a clear, hands on understanding of firearms. If they choose to hate guns as adults, at least they will have somewhat of an educated perspective and not just reflect fear instilled in them by their teachers and mentors.
“While the people are virtuous they cannot be subdued; but when once they lose their virtue then will be ready to surrender their liberties to the first external or internal invader.” ― Samuel Adams

I don't consider people who want to take my means of self-defense away by force via the government to be friends --to me they're enemies.
