As a high school student, I read Grapes of Wrath and Of Mice and Men. Later on I lived and worked in "Steinbeck country" for several years. It was interesting visiting some of the areas where he lived.John Ernst Steinbeck, Jr. (February 27, 1902 – December 20, 1968) was an American writer. He is widely known for the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel The Grapes of Wrath (1939), East of Eden (1952) and the novella Of Mice and Men (1937). As the author of twenty-seven books, including sixteen novels, six non-fiction books, and five collections of short stories, Steinbeck received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1962.
A few years ago I was talking to a co-worker at work who home schools his son. I asked him what he was teaching him and he mentioned that they were reading "The Grapes of Wrath". I was surprised! I didn't think school still read Steinbeck. I went over to half price books and bought a copy. I hadn't read it since high school. It was better the second time.
