The Myth Behind Defensive Gun Ownership

Post by gthaustex »

Another article trotting out the same tired arguments. They cite a couple of examples of bad gun handling resulting in injury or death and then extrapolate that to the public at large. They then turn around and claim that arguments made by John Lott et. al. are invalid for exactly the same reason...extrapolation. Sigh......

Everything out of the mouth or "mind" of a liberal or an anti-gunner is a lie. The ones that write articles like this know they're liars. The ones that read such articles and believe them want to believe and dare not question the lies because they're not pathological enough to consciously repeat them, yet are still desperate to validate their biases.

It appears most of the comments I saw do not agree with the article.

So, this author rejects Dr Kleck's study and statistics. Dr Kleck, by the way, revealed (In his 1997 book, Targeting Guns) that:
... he is a member of several liberal organizations, including the American Civil Liberties Union, Amnesty International, and Democrats 2000. He is registered as an active Democrat and has contributed financially to the campaigns of Democrat political candidates. He is not a member of the National Rifle Association, or any other pro-gun organization.
So Dr Kleck, an avowed Liberal and non-NRA guy crunches the numbers and comes up with pro-gun results - and this author doesn't like it? The author of this hit-piece mentions Prof David Hemenway's rebuke of Kleck's study - but conveniently leaves out Dr Kleck's counter-reponse to that rebuke here:

Pay attention to section 4 where he tears Prof Hemenway to shreds.
Well Done!

To begin with
"They surveyed 5,000 individuals, asking them if they had used a firearm in self-defense in the past year and, if so, for what reason and to what effect."

People don’t usually purchase a gun and have it for one year. Most guns are bought and kept for a few years or a lifetime.

A person may not have used a gun for self defense within the last year but have used it 43 (random number) times since they bought it.

This study started out to support a foregone conclusion and with a lot of work distorting the facts succeeded.
God Bless America, and please hurry.

I think it's a safe bet that they don't believe that, but they want the typical (read "low-information") voter to believe it.
