Is there a corelation? or is their a causation? Punishment from God? Trump playing favorites? They have incompetent leadership at home? They are stupid and more genetically predisposed to get sick?

The missing link in the causation/correlation is population density. All of those correlate to population density.

After reading some research about the role of D3 in fighting respiratory infections back in February, I started taking a multivitamin (containing 1000 IU D3) plus an additional 1000 IU of D3 daily. After reading some literature about D3 not being toxic below 30,000 IU/day, I upped my daily intake to 10,000 IU/day.
