Galveston: Today's mopes and dopes

If this was a grifter, usually they can talk their way out of just about anything.

He could have claimed that it was the house of a friend that had let him live there, or that he had the wrong address. The homeowner probably would have called 911 and in the end it would have been nothing worse than a trespassing charge.

Maybe the guy was delusional. I dunno.

In Galveston Friday a 53-year-old man allegedly broke into a house in the 1100 block of 36th Street. The woman who lived there shot the man multiple times with a paintball gun and called the police. An officer arrested the man inside the house. The suspect was charged with taking "coins and Ramen noodles."

This goes to show how some people just don't appreciate a helping hand. She probably would have given him some noodles if he had asked nicely.

There used to be a guy around here who, shall we say, was not dealt a straight flush in life. He either had been dropped on his head as a baby or suffered from an oxygen shortage at some point.

I paid him to do small outside chores. One time I gave him a sandwich because he said he was hungry, and he complained about the sandwich.

Needless to say that was the last time he got anything other than a dirty look from me.

Anyone have info on the happenings last night? My wife and I were awakened by our neighbor banging on our door at 12:30 last night. Turns out both my car and my wife's were involved in a hit and run accident that spanned multiple blocks and involved as many as 5 cars. The guy plowed through my wife's car and drove it into the back of mine, he kept the pedal to the metal and spun her car perpendicular to the curb leaving her car with extensive damage to both ends and my car with a damaged rear end. He also totaled a suburban and clobbered a new camaro. He just kept on going though, luckily a woman who witnessed all of this followed him and led the police to him. I can't seem to find this anywhere on the Internet news. Galveston police were very helpful and didn't freak out when I told them that I needed to retrieve my handgun from my wife's glove box before the wrecker hauled it away.

I don't know anything about that incident, but dollars will get you donuts that it was a drunk driver.

About five cars have been destroyed by hit-and-run drivers on my block in 16 years. One of them was mine. A woman crashed into a stop sign and ran into a big yucca plant my yard in the middle of the afternoon. She would have hit the house if not for the plant. She and a couple of other drivers were caught a short time later (usually with flat tires or leaky radiators). They all had blood alcohol that was off the chart.

Usually minor stuff like property damage collisions and DUI arrests aren't in the paper until the next day, if ever. The police department lists arrests about once a month, but most are pure bare-bones facts, like "John Doe, age, address, DUI."

As for the police, you couldn't ask for a better attitude concerning legal ownership of firearms than the current acting police chief.

On Friday police investigating a collision on Seawall Boulevard smelled marijuana at the scene. They found 5 pounds of marijuana in one car and arrested the occupants, two Galveston men.

After an investigation they searched a house in the 5400 block of Avenue O 1/2 and seized another 2 pounds of pot.

It always seemed to me that someone who is carrying around a felony-level amount of drugs maybe should drive carefully and not actually use the drugs at the time.
