I just got started with reloading. after pondering the same question, I chose a Lee 4-hole turret.

my starting kit consisted of:
lee turret kit (incl press, powder disp, scale, other misc)
lee 4-die set for .45
lyman tumbler
kinetic (hammer) bullet puller

this was the result of alot of forum lurking and reading 'abc's of reloading'.

I got the whole shot from midwayusa for a little less than $200.

as for the press itself, I notice the following +/-

+
once dies are installed and tweaked, you don't have to touch them again (not the case with a single stage)
one operation per lever pull (good for the beginner)
moderately quick. ~20sec/rd for me
cheap - not much more than a single-stage

-
slower than a progressive
since the dies are in non-fixed assembly, there is more mechanical variation, esp. in bullet-seat operation to determine OAL.
luckily for me the OAL variation isnt too big a deal. but it may be for some.
