Might I recomend that you take your gear with you. You never know what turn of events will allow you to shoot. Someone might have a spare nylon holster for you to use or something. Never know.tboesche wrote:However, i will definately show up and watch.
how do I get started in competative shooting?

Wildscar- Ok you convinced me. I will throw the CZ into the glove box in the morning and bring a couple boxes of ammo and a couple mags. Is 2 mag's enough or do I need 3

tboesche,
I'm an IPSC shooter and the idea that IPSC is more oriented toward expensive equipment is not the case. At one time, yes, it had evolved into an equipment race, but in the last 8 years that I have been shooting in it, IPSC has been a very practical shooting discipline. In Production division, for example, you can not make any modifications to the gun except sights and a few very minor things. You also have to shoot a double action auto, no single actions like 1911's.
One of the best guns to compete with is an out of the box stock Glock and magholders must be behind the hip as well as the holster.
Open Division is anything goes as far as equipment. To some degree, this could be considered an equipment race, but you still have to be pretty good to win.
I like IPSC because I can talor my style and equipment to how I carry and what I think is important to my individual training needs. I'm not saying IDPA isn't good though. The advantage of IDPA is that they draw from concealment and stress shooting behind cover. However, you can do that in IPSC if you want to and sometimes you have to. Tactical reloads are a good thing to know as you have to retain the used magazine and also reload a fresh one. I don't like being forced to do a tactical reload every time though.
I like the high round count of IPSC, because it pushes me to the limit in reloading and shooting.
Guy's, I know I'm out numbered so I won't bash IDPA. Otherwise....
When I was into martial arts, I found that the instructor and class was more important than the particular art. It's the same here for the most part.
As far as which is the best, I would say that the people that make up the individual club are a more important factor than the actual sport. A well run club makes shooting matches more enjoyable and motivational.

I completely agree with your last paragraph....the people make all of the difference. Some of my best friends were met shooting IDPA.ShootingStar wrote: Tactical reloads are a good thing to know as you have to retain the used magazine and also reload a fresh one. Your statment about reloads confused me a little bit. You are not forced to do tactical reloads very often....most match directors give each shooter the choice of any acceptable IDPA reload and pretty much set the stages up to reload at slide lock.

I am new to Cross Timbers myself. I have shot about 5 matches. Everyone at CT is very friendly and helpfull. If you have ANY questions, feel free to ask anyone. It has been a great expieriance for me in many ways. It is one thing I look forward to every week.
Bring what gear you have.....someone may have a holster you can use.

I shoot with Cross Timbers IDPA too.
You'll do fine with two magazines. I bring four just because I have four. That way I get to rotate them and even out their use. You don't need a jacket. A button up shirt will do. Usually I just wear what I'm wearing to work. If that happens to be a t-shirt, then I yank that t-shirt up and draw just like I would in a real situation. As you get more into it and those half seconds matter, you can get a shooters vest.

David,
I had a great time and will definately be back. Not sure if I can make it every week but at least every other week. You guys are a great bunch, I will definately recommend to some of my other shooting buddies.
I want to say a special thanks to Mike for letting me use his Glock and holster so I could shoot.
