Re: I thought he knew and understood the rules of gun safety
my 11 year old daughter corrected my 10 and 9 yo nieces on proper gun handling when they got their new .410's for Christmas. I wasn't there when they opened them, but my wife said they were swinging them around and my daughter jumped all over them for it.
I guess the lessons in safety I gave my daughter stuck. I'm proud of her. guess I need to talk to my nieces now.

If guns kill people, then I can blame mispelled words on my pencil

When I was a kid I always had toy guns. WHen I got my first 22 rifle for my 7th birthday I knew it was no toy. It was always made clear to me the difference between toys and real guns. I always treat my guns with respect. I think kids can have fun with toy guns without forming bad habits. They know the difference between a gun and a water gun.
Re: I thought he knew and understood the rules of gun safety
I was raised hunting and fishing and got my first gun, a .20 guage when I was 7yr's old but I remember like it was yesterday the three time's I gut my butt wooped bigtime.
1st time I was about five and me and my brother were playing the old cowboy's and indian's, why was I alway's the indian
, but my dad caught us pointing the gun's at each other and we both got it. NEVER EVER point a gun at someone even if it's a toy gun he tell's us.
2nd time about a year later, cowboy's and indian's again, and my brother stood against tree and said shoot me so I did with my Daisy RedRider right in the chest. Boy did he start crying and my grandfather came running out of the house pulled a willow tree limb down and tore me up GOOD!!! I learned my lesson brother I tell ya.
3rd time was the very next day after the 2nd incident and once again me and my older brother were playing with the RedRider's and I shoot at the ground trying to hit something. Well it ricochet'd off something in the dirt made a 45 degree turn and hit my brother in the leg. Needless to say no matter how much I tried to explain it was fruitless and the worst part was I had to pickout my own willow switch that day
!
LESSON LEARNED!!!
Good story about gun safety.
