I was at Home Depot today to pick up some new door hardware for my aging doors and got an earful from a locksmith.
Evidently the technique has been around for a few years but with the advent of the internet, its becoming a common practice for thieves.

I don't know all of the details, but evidently there is an easy way to make special key (or buy one online) and simply insert it in any lock, give it a good bump while turning and the cylinder unlocks.

Google the term and then think about getting your locks changed.

I was taught that technique in the 70s, by another phone man, it's been around for a long time.

I own a set, but have never tried them. I don't know why I bought them, neither does my wife

I have a 100 lb. German Shepard who is VERY suspicious of anyone who he does not know. Not only does he bark agressively and rear up about 6 feet high at the front door when someone shows up, if anyone opened the door he would be very likely to go after them.

Mostly, we keep the door locked.

I know it's not the ideal, and I'd moderate his behavior somewhat if I could. But it works well in my rural location.

I serve as his backup. And I've always got some kind of 45 cal. item tucked away somewhere in easy reach.

I'm sorta relaxed about the whole business. I figure there's gotta be easier places out there for a BG to think about messing with.

This has to be the most common problem.

Also lots of homebuilders also throw out the 3 inch screws that come with the deadbolts and use 0.5 inch screws instead...

I've got a black lab and a german shepherd, both 100lbs or so. In fact, I used to live in Friendswood, and my German Shepherd roamed the house during the day while I was at work. I came home one day, and the back door had been kicked in, the lock was on the ground, my German Shepherd was in the house, and the door had been pulled shut with clawmarks on the inside of the door. I wish I could have seen their faces as they kicked in the door and saw my dog running at them! Hahaha, it still makes me smile when I think about it.
