IIRC, New Jersey is the only state that bans hollow point ammunition.

The thing to remember is LA is not to carry into casinos.

Since when does sense (tactical or common) have anything to do with laws? Especially gun control laws?

NJ's hollow point law is a bit more subtle than that. HP isn't banned, it's just restricted from carry guns (IIRC). Since so few people in NJ can get carry permits, it's mostly moot.

I read about someone that was arrested or charged or fined for having them in La. It was a long time ago, so I don't remember the details. So I visited the website for Concealed Carry Permits in La and searched but couldn't find anything in their guide. So I asked the Louisiana State Police via concealed_handguns@dps.state.la.us. Here is the answer:

"Hollow point bullets are prohibited under LRS 40:1811. (Refer to the definition of "armor-piercing bullet" in LRS 40:1810)."

That's all I know. I've wanted to go to the ammo department of some store to verify, but I haven't had a chance. It might apply only to carry, but since that's why I was asking, I didn't research further.

I don't know how hollow points are armor piercing, but I guess if they get to define it, they can make that definition as broad as they want.

Since hollow point ammunition does not meet the definition under 1810, 1811 could not apply.

PART IV. ARMOR-PIERCING BULLETS

§1810. Definitions

As used in this Part, "armor-piercing bullet" shall mean any bullet, except a shotgun shell or ammunition primarily designed for use in rifles, that:

(1) Has a steel inner core or core of equivalent density and hardness, truncated cone, and is designed for use in a pistol or revolver as a body armor or metal piercing bullet; or

(2) Has been primarily manufactured or designed, by virtue of its shape, cross-sectional density, or any coating applied thereto, to breach or penetrate body armor when fired from a handgun.

§1811. Prohibitions

A. No person shall import, manufacture, sell, purchase, possess, or transfer armor-piercing bullets.

B. Whoever violates the provisions of this Section shall be fined not more than one thousand dollars or imprisoned with or without hard labor for not more than one year, or both.

That looks to me like HPs are legal, but maybe it's one of those you'll-beat-the-case-but-get-the-ride-anyway scenarios. I didn't look further since the article I read specifically mentioned hollowpoints, and the SP verified it in the email.

I'll send a reply asking for an explanation since it'll be easier for me if I don't have to reload everything everytime I go visit family or on a fishing trip.

Back to the original topic, I carry when driving out of state specifically because of the types of people you encounter at rest stops and interstate gas stations. It always seems like the dregs of society congregate/accumulate along the interstates... Once I get to our destination (generally visitng family), gun normally stays locked up due to young kids in the house, or stays in the truck. Between my TX and FL CHL's, however, I am legal to carry when visiting both sides of the family...

When I lived in Baton Rouge, LA in the early '90's, I almost always had a high capacity 9 loaded with hollow points in the car with me. Had to pull it once, too, but fortunately the BG decided he didn't really want to car jack me after seeing I had the drop on him...

My last two trips out of state, I traveled via air to Kalifornia . . . and since they were short trips, I only had my briefcase and a small overnighter.

If they honor a Texas permit I carry, otherwise I don't. Toured the New England states last fall, flew into Boston. Of course I was nekkid on this trip.

The last time I flew, I didn't take my handgun. Knowing what I know now, I would probably have done it. I did bring a stun gun; they gave me absolutely no trouble when I declared that at checked baggage.
I did call ahead of time to get the exact procedures for declaring it.

I always take it while traveling by car. I get a little nervous in Louisiana, as I suspect they may have a higher dirty cop ratio than other states. I just watch my driving behavior a little more closely there.

Whenever I drive out of state I carry as we have reciprocity in all the states I go to except Illinois.

I fly everyweek DFW-Austin-Houston-SanAntonio-ElPaso for work. It's such a hassle to do baggage claim that I alway carry my bags on, so I don't carry when I fly to any destination. Bummer because my employer allows us to CHL carry.

Sounds like you need to find a good deal on some Makarovs, or maybe the new Ruger LCP, and figure a way to store one in each major city near the airport.

The only times I have ever done it was when I was leaving the country and had no choice.

I print and learn as much of the law of the state/s I am visiting and stay away from areas that are know trouble spots (internet research). It is not a big hassle especially when flying from Texas to another state that honors our CHL. I only have one state to learn/refresh myself on. I concentrate on restricted areas and signs as well as any local law could get me into trouble. I leave the rest to research with what I have printed to help me out. I also make sure I have the phone number of the licensing agency of that state so I can call and ask questions. The info is most always available on the net if you get to a place with a connection.

I personally think we need to carry when outside our more familiar areas. I feel better knowing I can protect my family if something happens. When it comes to that I will do so no matter what the law may say. I do not visit states that I cannot carry in either. I will not give a cent to any state that doesn't recognize the value of our CHL. Doesn't matter to me if they just simply cannot work the laws in their state to accept us. (Why do I always feel when I make a statement like that I am tempting fate?) Anyway, get the needed info and have a good time while legally armed. Chances are you won't need it. But, if you do ........
