Could they be telling you something that's in the employee handbook meant for employees, not customers? Would it have to come from a manager type who should be more knowledgeable in the rules/policies of the store, or could any regular Joe tell you and it be binding? Just a Devil's Advocate question. I've carried past many non-compliant signs, and kept it concealed. Like some of you guys say, "Concealed is concealed". I have no intention personally of asking anyone anyway. If they're signs are non-compliant, I don't want to cause them to put up proper ones!
I don't believe it is specified from who (whom?) the verbal notice has to come from. IANAL, but think if the person is an employee or has the right to ask someone to leave the business for other reasons, then they would have the right to affect verbal notice for prohibition of CHL.

I figured that, too. If you just keep it concealed, and don't ask anyone if their signs are directed towards CHL's, then it's completely a non-issue. Just don't ask and keep it covered!

Actually, those ghost buster type signs do have legal grounds in Texas. They do not apply to CHL, but they do apply to others. For example, if you were traveling, the sign would apply to you. If you were carrying in your car, it would apply to you if they put it up in the parking lot. It applies to security guards and military. It applies to retired peace officers, but not to active peace officers. And oh yeah, if you are unlawfully carrying, it would apply to you and give the officer two charges he could file.
The sign gives proper legal notice under 30.05 for any category other than a CHL, IMHO.

I go in there all the time. Just ignore it.
Oh yeah I used to work at that Fry's.... Fun place to shop if you're not returning anything.
Crappiest job I've ever had ever.....
even compared to my first job where I made minimum wage.

What made it so bad?

I have never had any hassle returning anything to Fry's. They also dont hassle me when I refuse to be searched at the door unlike Sam's or CompUSA or Best Buy.

I'm guessing Fry's is fully aware of what signage applies, as they had proper 30.06 notification on the Arlington store when CHL first became available. I'm not sure when they removed it, but it's certainly not there now, and I think it's been at lease a couple years since I've seen it there.

I just have to post my story about Fry's . . .
I - at the time a newly-licensed CHL holder and still somewhat self-conscious - was carrying my BHP IWB under an untucked shirt . . . the Fry's in Austin had a sale, and checkout lines were L - O - N - G. (as an aside, NEVER AGAIN will I wait that long, but I was building a PC and buying
everything.)
Well, while waiting in line I got to talking to a few other shoppers - nothing special, just chewing the fat.
When all of a sudden, out of the blue, another shopper looks at me, and in a loud, hillbilly accent asks
"Hey, have y'all got a GUN with ya now?"
Oh heck . . . my heart leapt into my throat. Am I printing? Did my shirt ride up? Am I going to have to leave, post-haste? Why is EVERYONE IN EARSHOT looking at us?
So I said, "Uh . . . why do you ask?"
"Well" Mr. Hillbilly says, "If y'all had a GUN then y'all could just SHOOT ME right now, and I wouldn't have to wait in this line any more!!!"
Much laughter all around . . . so I made a show of patting myself down and said "Darn! I KNEW I forgot something this morning"
More laughter.
If they only knew . . .
