I have hunted and took game with all my current C/R Rifles:

M24/47 Mauser 8mm
K98 Mauser 8mm
.303 #4 Enfield
7.5x55 K-31 Schmidt Rubin
M1 Garand
1903 Springfield
M1 Carbine

I have put a huge dent in the wild hog population with all the above except the M1 Carbine, which I save for rabbits, armadillos and Wild Dogs. I took 4 deer over the last 5 years with my Mauser, Enfield, 1903 & Garand. Contrary to popular belief, the iron sights on all these weapons are sufficeint for kill shots 100-200 yds. The Garand with good ammo in particular is a death dealer out to 300 providing the shooter does his part (being a outstanding Marine does not hurt either--ha ha).

I have a .303 Enfield Mark V that I got 35 years ago, it was close to mint condition and still is, and I find that it's been an excellent hunting rifle. It's one of those guns that you think was built specifically for you. Like your favorite boots.

Mk. V, or No. 5?

The No. 5 is commonly called the Jungle Carbine and is very popular. The ShtLE Mk. V was a trials rifle made 1922-24, sort of an intermediary between the No.1 SMLE, and the No.4 of WWII. Only about 20,000 were made, and it was never put into service; the number surviving is unknown.

I haven't added a No.5 to my Lee Enfield collection yet, but I do have a Mk.V that I'm proud of.

We encourage most clients to use military rifles for easy follow up shots. We also require them to demonstrate competency on the range before we take them out. Many people think they are more accurate then they are. We need to know what they can consistently demonstrate on demand under field conditions.

I've gotten 2 javis and a couple 'yotes with my Yugo SKS. Nothing yet with the K31 or either Mosin, but it's just a matter of time...

I don't make shots beyond 250 - 300 yds so I never needed anything more than a SKS or AR-15. I grew up using a .30 cal. Carbine and never had a problem. Most military rifles are accurate and the AR type rifles are light weight. With a good bullet and short range the necessity for anything else disappears. I would love to have one of the nicer deer rifles but I would be so concerned with not scratching the thing I probably would use it anyway.

I hunt with a mosin nagant m-44 using 147 gr on up to 180 gr bullets and hog s don't have achance. this year will be the 1st deer hunt with my m-44 so we'll see how she does, I don't suspect any problem's though, she has a good "punch"!

I only hunt with my m-44's cuz that's all I still got as far as bolt gun's go.

Thanks for resurrecting this one. I loaded my hunting ammo today & shot 6 through "Badger", the M1A.

i killed my first hog with the Russian sks, then years followed the STG 58 fal got a doe, then my Garand a hog. Now I m looking to use my M 39 Finn mosin to do some hogs. Its a blast to see how these non scope rifles can do.

I use my DPMS LR-308 in .308 for my deer gun, hog gun, coyote gun, etc. Yes it's heavy, but it's never a big deal when sitting in a stand.

Longtooth, that beautiful M1A will handle the task at hand without breaking a sweat.

I must admit that I may be just a wee bit biased...
