I do a lot of trading, from both sides. I try to be considerate of others as I expect the same.
A gun show FTF deal is a different matter. If someone is waiting behind you and looks interested, I am going to give you a chance to commit first.
If you are not ready, and say so, I'll talk to the next guy. If the guy behind you wants the item, it's his.
Online, if I get two commitments, I check the times. First one wins, 2nd is the backup if first deal falls through.
Between the time you and I started this conversation and the time it ended, I found a pistol I'd been looking for online at a good price. It had been posted 10 minutes earlier. It took me all of 2 minutes to post "I'll take it" and follow with an email. We concluded the deal with cash before 2:00.
If you see something you want, you can't let the grass grow under your feet. If you commit and the item isn't as described, you are entirely within your rights to back out. But if you don't commit, you do without.
