Seriously? A standoff that lasted hours? For a guy with a knife? What was he going to do if they tried to get him, mangle the dead body some more?

Subduing a lunatic with a knife is extremely dangerous. He can do a lot of damage, even kill, in seconds. Probably the police didn't have Tasers, so their choice was to shoot him or wait until he got off the bus of his own volition.

The RCMP doesn't have tear gas or OC bombs? Maybe they're not allowed to in Canada.

I don't know what the Canadian police have available on short notice. It seems they didn't have a non-lethal means of subduing the guy, or maybe their protocols call for waiting as a first resort when the criminal can't do more damage.

Police in the U.S. are much more heavily armed than police in other civilized countries, and they are much quicker to use force. I am not saying this as a criticism but as a fact. American criminals are also more heavily armed and quicker to use deadly force.

Regarding the effectiveness of my little mouse gun when a random stranger gets the word to rip my head off with a rusty Buck knife, I get it. I'm not having a good day.

Everyone in that bus was at risk from that madman. Everyone qualified should have been carrying and it should have been legal for them. Bad guys need to learn not only their victims pose a threat, but the handgun carrier they didn't even know was there might come after them like Jurassic Park's stealthy velociraptors.

If you see me getting my head hacked off, it's a little late in the game for me to live happily ever after, but would you please remember the Big Rule about being sure of your target and what's behind it, and, if prudent to do so, kindly end my murderer's threat to others?

I'm seeing reports he was committed to a psychiatric hospital. So which is it, fully discharged with no restrictions or committed to a psychiatric hospital. Hard to tell which news source to be live in now a days.

The board reviews Baker’s file annually and has ruled he could move out on his own following an updated assessment report that would include conditions for living in the community.

Baker originally was kept in a secure wing at the Selkirk Mental Health Centre, but the board has granted him increasing freedoms almost every year.

The request for more freedom came from Baker’s medical team, which said he has been a model patient and understands the need to continue to take anti-psychotic medication.

Maybe I am overly cautious but every single time I have shipped a firearm anywhere I have notified the carrier in writing (e-mail) to the address they list, usually under "contact us" on their site. I think this is a lot safer than a verbal statement at the counter since I have evidence they were notified before the shipment.
