I've heard too many stories of ankle-carried guns getting away while running and fighting to ever want to risk that. I can't imagine the SmartCarry easily dumping the weapon, and simply bending at the waist provides pretty solid retention if the BG somehow figures out the gun is there. Also, I can reach the SmartCarry from pretty much any position, without the contortions involved in getting to an ankle holster while wrestling on the ground.

I am just trying to provide some "food for thought." My point was that maybe he was comfortable using an ankle holster because of previous experience using it for his BUG. I have never considered an ankle carry holster, but I haven't carried more that one gun at a time. It seemed to work for the "Retired LEO" so it's fine with me.

I have never tried the "Smart Carry" approach. The idea of having a handgun stuck in my crotch, never appealed to me. If it works for you, it's fine with me.

Loss of ankle carried guns can be an issue, depending on how they're secured. They are also much harder to defend from a weapon retention point of view.

When I was in uniform, I carried my backup on a holster that attached to the straps of my bullet resistant vest. That worked great for me.

I would think that they would be harder to detect so the BG wouldn't be trying to get at your gun. Also, I would think you could kick someone in the head if they were trying to get at your ankle gun.

All true - when you're standing up. I should have clarified that the weapon retention comment referred to ground fighting situations where the ankle rig often becomes visible.
