Re: Anyone quit drinking since getting CHL?
I will freely admit to having been a heavy drinker just over 15 years ago, my late wife had just passed away and it seemed like a good idea at the time. I got over it, so I could have been considered a "social drinker" for the period between my epiphany and gaining my CHL. Once I started carrying I pretty much quit drinking, I will have an occasional beer when carrying, but I have a side reason for that, I am mildly allergic to a wide variety of foods including the top of the food pyramid BEER!!! One once in a while doesn't usually bother me, with a large meal, but I am asking for problems if I over imbibe, and by that I mean more than one every month or more.
Last Christmas time my wife decided not to drink at a party, so I made her designated carrier and driver and had a couple of vodkas. The result was my sister in law almost having a melt down, she had never seen me drink and here I had had two.

Most likely you are allergic to certain species of hops, if not all varieties. Very few folks are aware that certain beers they drink and can directly link to abnormal headaches (after as few as a single beer) are due to the variety of hops used in the beer. Most European imports use "noble hops" that seem to have less allergins than most of the varieties used in American products. For kicks, the next monthly gift of liquid bread you partake of, try a nice imported Weizen, Dopplebock or Abby Ale. It may just cure what "ales" you.

Thanks surv, I have noticed that the Bock beers bother me less, which leads to an affinity for Shiner Bock. The big problem is conducting the research.

Wow - touchy huh?!jeeperbryan wrote:huh? how could my post be used in court? for what? i didn't say i was an alcoholic or have ever made bad decisions under the influence. so i'm not sure what "drinking habits" you're referring to
First Q&A - anything posted on these bulletin boards is available to the public. If someone (note I am using a generic here since I was not referring specifically to you or any other specific person), says something here that can be used later by, say a prosecution team, then it will find its way into court. I have seen posts on forums where posters state their hatred of certain classes of people, discuss their need to have 'the biggest cannon they can get so's to make sure the person they shoot is dead with one shot,' etc. I had a woman in one of my CHL renewal classes state that she had been robbed several times and 'could hardly wait until she could "legally" shoot the BGs.' Although not a post on a public forum, that little statement made in crowded room (an excited utterance, representation) would make its way into court as well should that woman ever have to make a decision to defend herself using deadly force. Simply - I was cautioning anyone posting a reply to your original comment that is is ill advised to start remarking that they regularly consume alcohol and carry. I am not the CHL forum police - I was just saying it is a bad idea to make public statements that could affect someone's defense if they had to go through the court system. If you don't think that these forums (and emails and PMs) cannot catch up with you - they can. When I worked for the Feds - every time the agency got a lawsuit that involved something I was involved in, all my emails, computer histories, and files, were taken to the Office of Counsel and examined//turned over to the plantiff. Same thing happens to citizens everyday. Does any of the above have logic and are you OK with that explanandum?
Second Q&A - Did not say you were "an alcoholic or have ever made bad decisions under the influence" (I am quoting you now). Prosecuting attorney: "So Mister JeeperBryan, you do admit you have made decisions while under the influence? And you believe these have been the correct decisions?" Do you get my drift now sir?
Third Q&A - Again - I was attempting to use a generic term for the audience. I was not specifically discussing your personal intake of alcohol ("drinking habits") - although you may have made that admission already (see Q&A part 2 previous). I guess I could have lengthened my definition of 'drinking habits' as well as been more careful about the use of the pejorative "you" - I was just trying to keep it short and most certainly was not addressing any specific person.
Now - before you (JeeperBryan) go and get all riled up (stirred up; variant of roil to agitate), I responded to your post in a 'tongue-in-cheek' manner (ironic, not meant to be taken seriously). Calm down, take a breath, and just consider what I said previous - it is still a bad idea to put certain aspects of one's life on the internet.
OK?

Drinking (sometimes even talking about it) does that to people.
This thread is starting to get interesting.

Re: Anyone quit drinking since getting CHL?
I was driving years before I got a CHL so getting a CHL didn't change my drinking habits except now I don't go to 51% victim zones.
We're here. With gear. Get used to it.

I'm on a date, and would like to have a glass of wine with dinner...I do it. (carrying). Having 3 margaritas over nachos...Not happening. You're an adult carrying a weapon. Act like one. Use discretion.

Re: Anyone quit drinking since getting CHL?
One of the reasons I got my CHL was I hurt my back really bad, so figuring I will not be able to defend myself like I could in the past, I went and got my CHL. The DR told me that I HAD TO QUIT DRINKING due to the meds I will be on 4 the rest of my life. This was a heartbreaker as I was an alcoholic , I drank EVERYDAY from the age of 17 or so up until Sept. 19th 2005.I do drink maybe 3 or 4 times a year but nothing in the amount of quanity as I had in the past. The withdrawal was AWFUL.
Re: Anyone quit drinking since getting CHL?
My compliments to you for being able to follow through on controlling your desire. It's a difficult thing to do and I give credit to people who can do it. It shows true strength of character.

Thank you. To many teetotallers' way of thinking, one drop of alcohol touching one's lips produces the same debilitating state as chugging a fifth of hard liquor. And of course, that's simply ludicrous.

FWIW, IIRC, AFAIK, FTMP, IANAL. YMMV.
Re: Anyone quit drinking since getting CHL?
Yeah there is no MINIMUM level of alcohol, so in other words if you are under 0.08, it doesn't matter because when you carry, there is no minimum level. If the LEO says you are intoxicated, YOU ARE.
I thought long and hard about this on my way home from getting my CHL. It was a 1-hour drive, can ya blame me?
Anyways, I agree with the first few comments the most - I feel like this is a RESPONSIBILITY I don't want to lose/abuse and I feel it has made me mature a bit. I rarely drank before (maybe 2 drinks, once a week) and now I will drink even less and only when not carrying or else only when at home.
