Tell ya the truth..if you don't want to start with a plinker...go ahead and go lever action.

I have a Winchester 30-30, the ammo is still cheap, ammo is very prolific, good for deer hunting/self defense/plinking, isn't and "eeeevil black rifle" and are an iconic figure for us "cowboys"

You can find Winchester 94 and Marlin 336 for fairly cheap (anywhere from $300-500) Plus if you ever have to go back to a unfriendly gun state...those lever actions are for the most part safe from the bulk of bans (for now)

There is a gun show coming up very soon in Houston at the GRB convention center...that would be a GREAT place to start!

I am in Temple, about halfway between Waco and Austin. I do spend a lot of time in Austin though.

+1 to this. You want someone who is not trying to sell you something. Go to a local watering hole or to one another's home and sit around talking about firearms. I guarantee you'll have a great time. Better yet to go out shooting. Don't be afraid to ask questions - like I said your other thread about buying an AR-15, gun people can be some of the friendliest people in the world. Every once in a while you'll come across a jerk, but I would think you'd get that person in every sample of the population. But for the most part, whether it be at a show or in a gun shop or at the range, the people are outstanding.
