The finest AK I've had is my VEPR. They're heavy built, thicker barreled, and more accurate than any other AK's I've had (Rom, Yugo, Bulg). Not certain if you can find them now, though. If so, the price may be rather high.

I have a RPG AK 47, very sweet shooter. These guys custom build an AK from the ground up, using an Elk River receiver. They also use a brand new US made barrel. RPG's AKs utilize the kit's trigger group but they polish for a nice pull. RPG offers several stock configurations from Tapco synthetics to woods and folders. I bought from them at a Gun Show months ago and have no idea how they're doing since the election.

I paid $550 for that rifle as you see it except for the muzzle brake, that's an add on. I've ran a couple of hundred round thru it, no malfunctions of any type.

What are the thoughts on the Maadi's? I love mine (pre-ban), but I do not really hear anything about them. Perhaps no news is good news. I am about to replace the scope with a red dot sight/laser combo. I love the accuracy with the scope, but not what I got it for :). I have only been to the range 3 times with it and it has worked perfectly every time and always turns heads :).

The Chinese Polytechs are the best ever INMO. But I have'nt seen them commonly since the late 80's.

When I first got the gun, that 50 round mag had a peice of tape on it with a price (like it was fresh from a gun show), and appears that the previous owner had not tested it. I have yet to try it out, but I shall try it out at my next range trip. Putting the last 2-3 rounds in it is tough, and the first 2-3 feel very loose. What worries me is that the frist 2 or so will not have enough tension to load up. I will let you know how it does when I do get to test it. All the 30 round mags work great. I cannot wait to try out a drum mag that I am getting soon.

My opinion on the best:
The Vepr rifles are really good guns. Mine is accurate and tough.

I have fired a Saiga 223 that was fun to shoot and reliable as any AK. Really good fit and finish. It was a converted rifle though, not the 10 round version.

I have heard the Arsenal guns are very good, but I have never fired one, just read about them.

I have fired a WASR 5.45 rifle before. The action sounds like it is full of gravel and the fit and finish don't. However, it was fairly accurate and worked. The mag well was slight loose so the thinner bakelite mags didn't work very well. I have heard some used to have canting of the front sight which was hard to correct.

Any AK will do. If it goes bang buy it.

If you can find one. :patriot:

Arizona Response Systems was building a lot of AKs. Dunno what they have in stock, now. Superior finish, built by a real smith with factory tools and aircraft quality rivets, refinished wood, tested/zero'd. I have a pair of the standard rifles, and they're excellent.

Polytech, Lancaster. I have a homebuild on a Romanian G Kit that works well too. You cant go wrong with nearly any of them due to their loose tolerances and "minut of man" capabilities.
