Thanks for the response. I have a variety of ages in my classes. I think you hit the mark when you talk about fatigue. Most likely the fatigue is from concentrating on the front sight and focusing back forth from the front sight to the target and back sight. I do give them breaks etc...

Eye strain is a tough one - the best remedy is practice. They have to simulate the conditions from the range in an everyday setting. For example, a good approximation of the situation is just to hold up a pen or pencil at arm's length while watching television, and then shift focus from the tip to the TV. Make sure you tell them to get each object in clear focus, no cheating! Just like any other workout, it will be difficult at first and will get easier over time. Just 5-10 minutes of this, twice a day, and they will hopefully notice a difference.

You're doing the right thing by giving them breaks. Once you get major eye strain, it can make you borderline nauseous, and then you don't want to do much of anything. Just let them know that just like any other skill, it takes practice, and once they get enough repetitions it will get better.
