I have never given a second thought to carrying my CCW to the range and unholstering when I am ready to shoot. When I check in at the counter, I usually have to show my ammo depending what range I am at, but it has never been an issue. While browsing through the store portion, like others have said, it would not be a good idea to draw.

I have never seen a range or gun store posted 30.06 (or ghostbuster in OK), but I don't believe I'd do business if I did.

ASSAULT RIFLE
By U.S. Army definition, a selective-fire rifle chambered for a cartridge of intermediate power. If applied to any semi-automatic firearm regardless of its cosmetic similarity to a true assault rifle, the term is incorrect.

Ahhh, my apologies. I did not realize "Assault Rifle" was a formal, technical term. It does seem I am using it improperly.

So what is my M4 semi-auto called then? A non-assault rifle? A combative rifle? A wanna-be?

If it has a legal length barrel, and isn't select fire, it's not an M4, it's an AR-15. (or M4gery )

the point I make, that my good friend expounded upon, is that if you use the term that the ANTI's love (assault rifle/weapon) then you give creedence to them, and their ignorance.

I'm only mildly trying to give you a hard time, in the hopes that my friendly chiding will get you to use the correct vernacular, thusly adding one more person to "our" side, not "theirs."

and the term I personally like is SUR (Sport Utility Rifle)

Not the one in Grapevine. They do NOT want you to declare and lock your CCW at the front counter. They want you to keep it concealed until you're on the firing line and ready to shoot. Ditto. I just unholster once I get to my lane. For "modesty's" sake, I try to turn my gun side away from the window, and draw when I think that the attention of those near the cashier is elsewhere.

Correct--I do most of my range work at Bass Pro in Grapevine. I usually have a range bag with ammo. Since it usually means someone is going to the range, they'll ask about needing to put trigger-locks on the guns. I've told them it's not necessary, and it's only been an issue once. I simply (although reluctantly) told the guy at the front I had my CHL, and he told me to head on back.

When you get to the counter at the range, I've only been asked if I have locks to remove. A simple "No" response is all that's required.

A good point I read recently, might have been here, was that we can be hurting our cause by using terms like Evil Black Rifle (EBR) or EBS for shotgun which can play into the agenda of the antis. Even the term "Tactical Shotgun" can be frightening to the panty wetters. We know it might be in jest but like the Miranda warning says "what you say can and will be used against you....".

I have used the term "Sport Utility Rifle".

I think EBR is so ironic and mocking that the antis ignore it.

Many minority groups have taken pejorative terms and used them to mock bigots. Most of these terms are not 10-y-o-d-safe. The cleanest example that I can think of is Mexicans or Spanish-speaking Texans who call each other mojado (wetback) in a friendly way. I've even heard parents call their kids mojado.

My wife and I both call ourselves gun nuts. It disarms anyone who may be critical of our shared hobby activities.

Tactical seems to be a substitute for combat or defense, and it is also not on the antis' radar.

I'm actually surprised that they ignore certain forums, where a lot of violent and hateful language is posted that could cast us in a bad light.

After the severe beating the NRA took to "clean up their act" I figgered the SUR was a better option.

I can't imagine a gun-store posting a 30.06 (and stay in business). I know I've gone into Target-Masters before and they have a sign that says no loaded weapons. I talked to the manger and that sign is posted for people coming in to use the range, but concealed carry still applies for the rest.

I was at the Texas City municipal range last weekend; the rule is that all guns used on the range must be out with slide open when entering the building and walking out to the range. If you want to shoot your carry piece, you must go outside, unload it and lock the slide open before entering the office/range area. This rule applies to everone, including LEOs.
