"Woo-woo" Lights go round and the siren goes "woo-woo." Normal referred to a rookie who wants everybody and their brother to know they are a police officer. Not considered an endearing term among veteran officers. Most departments had an internal dress code for officers who are plainclothed or off duty. Not really a good idea to run around with you gun in plain sight, as you are the first to be shot, right before the hold up goes down.

My favorite part of that story is when he tries to demonstrate how it works, he almost hits a parked car and then blows through a stop sign, and you still can't hear the "woo woo."

Most departments have this policy. Ours dictates the badge must be placed next to the firearm. Due to the idiocy of a supervisor who shall remain unnamed, there is also a requirement to cover/conceal the firearm when outside a building.

I don't know if it is policy or not, but every plain clothes policeman I have ever seen had his badge on his belt next to his gun.
