the class i took was full service. even had fruit and donuts! guy was a veteran LEO, swat experience, whole nine yards. cool guy. if i am not halfway across the state i will likely drive the two hours to renew with him. told war stories but not necessarily his. gave examples of how firearms were used to save lives, kinda like the Armed Civilian in NRA mags. this was in Seguin, btw. if anyone wants the info i can PM the linky to his site.

I took the CHL course at Top Gun Shooting Range in Houston. Full service course and great instructor. Everything provided for $148.00. One thing I want to mention about the carrying guns in cars issue. The instructor we had talked about the traveling law and how it was legal to carry in a car when traveling. He also said that in Houston the police have been arresting people caught with guns in cars anyway. Their policy is to arrest first and let the courts figure out if the gun was legal or not. As far as I'm concerned that's pretty poor law enforcement. The police are just passing the buck to the courts rather than make a determination on their own. Meanwhile, you get arrested and have to go through the hassle that that entails. Doesn't seem fair to me.

I'm on the north edge of the DFW Metro-mess, so others in or closer to Houston may have more current experience, but I think the Motorist Protection Act in Sept. of '07 and D.A. Rosenthall's departure did away with the vast majority of that.

You don't say when you took the class. While the travelling laew is still in effect in Sept. 1st 2007, the law was clarified codified and made crystal clear with the motorist protection act. The act outlined 5 conditions that to which carrying is legal in a car.

Must be concealed
Toter must be legally able to purchase gun (not a crimminal
Note in a Gang.
Must own or be in control of the automobile
Must not be breaking any law except for a class c traffic violation

Prior to this act Chuck Rosenthal had made threats about arresting people and trying to get citizens to be more afraid of him than the criminals. Actually very few people actually got arrested, seems most Harris County LEOs and chiefs understood the law better than Chuck Rosenthal. As nears I can figure out Chucky became toxic over this issue, when he got into trouble over some emails The Republican Party abandoned support of Chucky and his political career has been pretty much destroyed. Why did you pay so much? full service classes can be found for $100 or less almost every where.

I took the class from Crossfire here on the boards. If you're in the DFW area I'd recommend her class. One stop shop, TX and Utah licenses, and she keeps the class entertaining and very informative.

I believed she learned from Chucks experience. Chuck wasn't alone in his anti-RKBA lobbying and we haven't heard much from his former allies. While there have been lobbiest that are testifying and campaigning the Brady trash. We haven't heard much from the elected DAs speaking against us.

Who was your instructor? I took the shooting part of the test at that range but the instruction part on at a different place in stafford (like 8 minutes away)

I will continue taking the courses to retain my CHL. It has been too valuable to me to let go, in spite of the inconvenience and costs.

Top notch guy and top notch instructor. Much like your own--he told war stories, but most of his were examples of what NOT to do.

Reminds me of pre-deployment training at Ft. Bragg for Combat Life Saver course. Special Forces Sergeant First Class (E-7) Medic taught the class. We were all fairly senior Officers and NCO's. He looked at us and said, "I am going to teach you only what you need to know and probably won't immediately forget. If I tried to teach you what the curriculum says you will never remember any of it".

We then spent 5 days (only) poking each other as we tried to learn IVs and various other medical things that he said would only be useful in combat.

He too was of the "not to do" philosophy of course-instruction.

I took the CHL class at TOP GUN last October and our instructor told us the same thing - his name was Dan Blackford.

I had a great class at Bullseye Range in Duncanville in November of 2007. It was full service with pics, fingerprints, range time and donuts and coffee. The only reason I left was to get some lunch. I don't remember the name of the instructors, but it was 2 guys plus 1 taking taking pics.

On the whole process, I wouldn't hesitate a second to do it again or to renew. I was (am) so excited to have my CHL. I am also very proud to have my wife having completed the online application and will get into a class this month or next.

To be more in charge of my own and my family's safety and security, I would absolutely do it again. No questions.
