yeah...Sam's is friendly until you try to leave with the items you have purchased.... when you do they feel like they need to check your cart to see if you've stolen anything. I like to say, "thank you for assuming I've stolen from you" as I leave.

One of the biggest issues you have in a lot of these stores (not just club stores) is a collective employee/customer theft. You would be surprised at how many employees will work with someone and not ring up several items that the 'customer' has in their cart. Between that and stuff going out the back door, it is a real large expense to the the corporation.

Yep, I don't mind that, as long as it's done fairly to everyone leaving the store. Fry's, Costco, many places do it.

It just rubs me the wrong way...but mostly I say it just to be a smart-aleck.

I think it's funny that retailers refer to theft as "shrinkage", although the term also includes items unaccounted for due to loss or accounting error. Most people would be amazed at the level of theft that goes on. If you frequent the self checkout lane at WalMart, next time really watch closely how some people "check out".

I have no problem with this at Sam's and Costco because the membership terms mention that the receipt check is part of your membership. At Fry's, Best Buy, and (the few times they ask) Wal-Mart, I just say "no thanks" and keep going. I don't have time for a 92 year old woman to go through my receipt line by line.
