We need to respect their culture and let them work it out internally. We shouldn't be "ugly Americans" and impose our values on them.
Isn't that what the Obots have been saying about foreign policy for the past eight years?

Along with measures such as targeting Texas, Arizona and California -- the three primary states where firearms are illegally smuggled into Mexico -- Diaz called for the implementation of an "effective" federal assault weapons ban modeled on a bill introduced in 2007 by Rep. Carolyn McCarthy, D-N.Y.
They must really think...uhhh, scratch that...
I believe they are just trying to rile us...slightly...

So for those who have not been playing along...
A few weeks ago, Holder mentions a ban.
Last night during Obama's "press conference" he feels the need to work in the statement that guns are going from the USA into Mexico. I had to point that out to my wife and tell her that this was now at least twice that they mentioned that, and they are going to now start building the case that we are hurting our neighbors to the south.
Then today Hillary Clinton says: "MEXICO CITY – U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said Wednesday that America's "insatiable" demand for illegal drugs and inability to stop weapons smuggling into Mexico are fueling an alarming spike in violence along the U.S.-Mexican border." (Link:
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090325/ap_ ... ton_mexico" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090325/ap_ ... ton_mexico) And then she says this, "Our inability to prevent weapons from being illegally smuggled across the border to arm these criminals causes the deaths of police officers, soldiers and civilians."
So they are now trying to create the straw man argument that our second amendment is now killing Mexican citizens, police officers and soldiers. We bear a "co-responsibility" now according to Hillary Clinton. They have now tied together our second amendment freedom with violence and death in another country. That is one step, but they will tie together other arguments which they believe are compelling and arguments which they know will play will on the nightly news and in the liberal big cities. Their goal will be for the regular sheep to hear the argument a few times, never questioning it, and let it just sink in. They want the average person to just accept the sound byte, which many will. They also want the cocktail party circuit to sit around sipping chardonnay, repeating the phrases that they are hearing as if it is fact.
This is all typical of the politician, create a fake or fictitious problem which suits their needs and then they propose their solution to this fake problem. Of course it was their solution that they wanted in the first place, so they needed a fictitious problem so that they could say, "Well, if 'A' is true, then clearly we must do 'B'".
In this case, the politician wants the desired outcome -- B: Gun ban.
So they create straw man argument A: U.S. Second Amendment is killing innocent people in Mexico.
This is the tail wagging the dog.
This is happening. This is moving forward. They are laying the foundation at this point -- the drum beat has started. They will accelerate it and accelerate it until they feel that they have enough people convinced that they can make a run around the defense and into the end zone. Every one of you are the defense and so are your families and it will take each of us standing up to be counted in order to sack this.
This is not going to go away on its own.
Just remember, this straw man has already been offered by Holder, then Obama now Clinton. They have indicated that they are going to make a move in due time. They will build their argument over time and then will exploit an unfortunate situation to harness emotion which will carry them through.

Rather than change our laws, why aren't we closing the border?
I've heard that we have a requirements that is going unfilled for Border Patrol agents. Maybe some of the unemployed could be trained to stop illegal crossings of the border (I bet you could even find a good sized group of ex-military who'd be willing to help out - especially if you let 'em shoot

).
Seems to me that we'd get a three-fer by closing it - stop illegal drugs that are in-bound, stop illegal weapons smuggling out-bound, and reduce our unemployment rate all at the same time (how's THAT for stimulus!

).
I know the border would still be a LITTLE porous, but I think we aren't even trying in many cases. Oh, and don't even talk to me about that stupid "fence along less than a third of the border" idea. I believe there's a cometition called "Over, Under or Through" held in Austin in which competitors seek to bypass a 30' fence in the shortest time, and the current record is something like 30 seconds. Also, San Diego has something similar, and it isn't particularly effective (I heard there's a four-lane highway underground from Mexico to SD). Given that, how long do you suppose that fence would slow down a coyote?
Of course, I'm just one of those gun huggers, so what do I know...

That is the sort of common sense that our government often lacks. Yes, shut 'er down and it fixes a lot of the problems. But, no, it just can't be that simple -- surely there is a bigger issue, which is the second amendment.

"The day they start taking their border security as serious as we do, Mexico will cut down tremendously on its amount of guns."
Truer words have never been spoken! As a teenager, I made several trips to Mexico during summers doing mission work with my church youth group. EVERY year, we got stopped and had to unload the vans, as well as our 24' enclosed trailer filled with clothing, camping gear and other supplies for the work we were doing. The corrupt government down there was SO worried about a Church of Christ (Mexico is a very Catholic nation, and any religious group that is not Catholic is seen as a threat to their culture) van full of kids and and tents, that they ignored the hundreds of vehicles crossing into their country loaded down with various items. I have since learned after attending the police academy, that those vehicles are EXACTLY what DPS Troopers in some counties look for when looking to make busts, except they can't stop them because that's profiling. You know the ones I'm talking about, small pickup piled unsafely high with bicycles and other items, most of which are actually stolen. That same vehicle was headed north about 2 or 3 days earlier, loaded down with drugs, but you have to catch them on the way in to make the bust, since they offload and load back up with stolen property and money. They choose bikes and things of little value to transport back because the chances of those items being reported stolen is much less than, for example a car, gun etc.
The idea that reducing our rights will somehow help Mexico stop their violence problems is absurd. The only reason the violence hasn't spilled over into America yet is that they are afraid that our police, military and above all, citizens, won't bend over and take it. Those fears are, IMO, well founded....for now anyway.

Watch it unfold... This will all tie in with the UN "Climate Change" Plan, Global Currency, coziness with communist and socialist nations. While gun control isn’t the main goal, it is a necessary step towards changing our country match our leader’s ideology. One bright spot, I saw on the news yesterday that some 60 democrat congressmen are against gun control and reinstating the AWB. Haven't done math on that, but it is a significant number.

Point of information ladies and gentlemen...
When a story like this comes up and we watch with intent to catch every detail of the way it is reported and possibly perceived by the unwashed masses...
When they show a picture of an "official" standing next to a table that has a lot of "guns" laid out on it...
I have noticed that a lot of the time those tables have had lots of nice, or in some cases, ratted out looking wooden stocked "bolt action" rifles and a bunch of revolvers of various types and calibers...
Not the tables full of EBR's we are led to believe permiate the drug cartels arsenals...
I do see those types of reports and evidence in some cases, but not all the time...
Just something to watch for...

Hillary says it is our problem - Americans are responsible for the drug traffic because they buy the drugs, and we are responsible for the gun problem in Mexico because we make and sell guns. Is anything in the world not created by, or the responsibility of, Americans??? I'm getting tired of this crap.

Isn' t part of the problem that Americans are buying illegal drugs? I thought this was a fair statement. Just wondering.

I think couzin is objecting to the double standard.
If Americans are the buyers, blame the buyers.
If Americans are the sellers, blame the sellers.
I think in both cases it makes more sense to blame the government because it's their job to secure the border from smuggling.
