Forgive my cynicism, but this just give these guys political cover while Obama and Holder attack our ammunition supply.

Actually with some liberals the RKBA is a liberal cause. There are liberals that truly believe in human rights and personal freedoms. A true Liberal must endorse the RKBA

Right! This blog post from last April lays it out. Maybe it's been posted here already, I don't know.

Henry Cuellar: wrong for the 28th District, wrong for America.

(Is that how you write a successful attack ad?) :grumble

EDIT: I just faxed this off to him. Let's see if it does any good:

Dear Representative Cuellar,

I read a news story from the Associated Press today that included a letter (dated March 17, 2009) from sixty-five House Democrats to Attorney General Holder urging him to not pursue an ill-advised “assault weapons” ban as he has recently stated he would.

After reading the letter from your colleagues, which I believe is well reasoned and factual, I was disappointed that I did not see your name among those attached.

Is there a reason you did not join your fellow representatives (including our neighbor, Rep. Ciro Rodriguez) in agreeing with this sensible statement? I don’t believe you are opposed to the individual rights of Americans to bear arms as enumerated in the Second Amendment, but it was distressing to not see your name on the letter.

I am sure that if both federal and state governments would strictly enforce the firearms laws already on the books, much of the gun crime that happens today would be either stopped before it happens or punished to the point that any misguided “gun bans” would be moot.

Thank you for your service on behalf of the people of Texas, and please remember that even though we may disagree on many policies, I remember you in prayer regularly in our Sunday services.

Sincerely,

Rev. UpTheIrons

Great letter! Nice to see Ciro's name on there, ie met him twice, once back in the late 80's and then again a few years ago.
Great guy.

Sorry, call me a cynic, but those 65 D's are more concerned about their reelection than anything else. I just read the GOA ratings for the 65 and there were lots of D's and F's. And the last paragraph of the letter about enforcing existing laws could mean anything.

While it is good news I would take it as a cover so that people will quit stock pilling guns and ammo. You can believe what you want, but just the fact that they took the time to make this statement scares me and many others more. You watch when and if the ban does come it will be outta no where and when you least expect it too.

That's the way the system is supposed to work, isn't it!

While I'm not going to close my eyes or turn my back, I see the letter as a powerful message to Pelosi and Obama not to waste time trying to implement another AWB. This letter doesn't mean that the signers will vote pro-gun on every issue. Some probably were motivated by self preservation, but they have to know that ballots are based on their actual voting records.

Does that matter? I think every one of them should receive our thanks. We attack these people when they act against our interests. Some would now attack them for this powerful Second Amendment endorsement.

It again fails to address, and even perpetuates the myth that the Founding Fathers never conceived of machine guns and armor piercing ammunition.

They never heard of anything but armor piercing ammunition because there was no practical body armor at the time that would consistently stop a musket ball. As for machine guns, Ride Fast and Shoot Straight can save me some typing. Don't even get me started on how much more effective a few ribauldequins would be as terrorist weapons than some puny SMGs.

What worries me is the few Texas democrats on that list. I thought Texas was more pro-gun than that. This should be a wake up call to all gun owners in Texas!

It has amzed me over the years how the Democrats stupidly keep shooting themselves in the buttocks over gun issues. For many, many years I worked at a craft where about 80+% of the guys were in the a union, which ALWAYS endored the democrat canadiate. However, the vast majority of these union members vote Republican over one issue and one issue alone - gun rights. If the democrats would simply take the stand that gun control and abortion should be decided at the state level, they could hold the majority of federal offices for a Looooooooog time. Maybe they are starting to realize just how much having a moronic view on the 2nd Amendment has cost tem over the years.

Sure didn't show it in the presidential primaries.

Actually, in a very strange and counter-logical way, it did.

Notice how Obama didn't talk about guns unless he was specifically asked. We all know his stance because we care about the issue more than most, but most americans probably never heard his stance on the issue during the campaign. We DID hear Joe Biden's, though.

When Eric Holder opened his mouth about an AWB, Pelosi and company panicked, and pulled the leash tight on him.

Finally, I have yet to see a similar picture with Obama instead of Clinton:

As far as I know, He never campaigned with the Bradys.

Don't get me wrong, we're not there yet, but I DO see progress. Maddeningly slow progress, and progress we can easily lose, but I DO see progress.

I remember both Hillary and Obama voice support for a new and improved AWB in the nationally televised debates. You're right that they weren't talking about it all the time, but they did make their views known and as far as I could tell it was a view held by all of the top tier candidates. Those that disagreed didn't make it very far, but I know there were other reasons for that.

I hope you are right and things are shifting towards a future in which it is possible for the candidates of both parties to be gun-friendly. It would be a nice change from the last election where we were taking from both sides.

I hope I continue to be right, too. Not saying we don't need to be vigilant, but I AM saying that the folks up at the top know it's a political loser.

I always got the feeling that Obama "supports an AWB" much for the same reason Bush did; it's something he can toss out there to get Brady supporters to like him, but I also think he knows that getting an AWB passed in congress will be a slim possibility.
