Selling a handgun in Texas
Re: Selling a handgun in Texas
I do not want to sell any firearm to felon. Ever! The only way to know is to do criminal background check. an FFL can do that for some $20 or less.
It is worth the money if you do not know the buyer. A more firearm out of a criminal hands is +1 for CHLer.

I disagree. I am very curious where and how you expect to sell firearms. If you expect to encounter that many felons, I'd like to stay away.Beiruty wrote:I do not want to sell any firearm to felon. The law only requires that you don't believe the buyer to be disqualified due to felon, drug user, etc.
It does not require that you take any steps to qualify a buyer.
We all have our own level of comfort on this. Some only sell to those with CHL's. To others, familiarity through this forum or others is sufficient. I'm 57 and have been buying many and selling a few for 40 years. I rely heavily on COMMON SENSE. I can say that I can't recall a single transaction that worries me.
One of the most threatening pieces of legislation that the anti-gunners would love to pass would require every sale to go through an FFL. To willingly do so when it isn't required should be unthinkable to any pro-gun person.
I do like to have a bill of sale when i sell one to be able to document that it is no longer in my possession.

I agree with you. I figure that by the time I get done communicating with the person I'm selling to, I have e-mails, a phone number and a bill of sale. I doubt a felon is going to leave such an easy trail to his doorstep to procure a gun.Mike1951 wrote:I disagree. I am very curious where and how you expect to sell firearms. Re: Selling a handgun in Texas
Well done, Mike. I agree with you completely.
I right unexercised is a right soon lost. Let's not give an inch to the antis. I've never sold a gun through an FFL and I never will unless absolutely necessary (shipping out of state, for example).
The best advice: use your best judgment and follow your instincts. If you're not comfortable relying on that, then just require that the buyer present a CHL. Her CHL is as good as performing a NICS check.

CHL is fine with me. Do you like to sell a pistol to wana be bank robber? or rapper, or just old gang banger?
I know I am against restrictions on gun trade and I with the freedom of exchange of firearms. However, I see no harm for disarming the gangs and such or at least deny them the easy access to firearms.
I would say capturing a felon with an illegal firearm should get 5 yrs automatic jail with hard labor. Felon and he wants to get armed? purge your record and come back.

I would never sell to someone like that, and they are obvious and easy to pick out. I would only sell through boards like these and the people I have met have been without exception decent upstanding citizens. The kind of people who I wouldn't hesitate to have over at my house for a BBQ with my family.Beiruty wrote:CHL is fine with me. If some scumbag showed up to buy, I would walk away from the deal without apologies.

There is still a flaw in your logic. Joe Gunbuyer could have a perfectly clean record and still go out and rob a bank the next day. A background check will not predict future behavior.Beiruty wrote: Do you like to sell a pistol to wana be bank robber?

Your first misconception is that people like that buy guns from people like us. People like you just mentioned buy guns through straw purchases. They have friends, girlfriends relatives buddies who all can qualify to buy guns legally. They also buy stolen firearms. Citizens adding a level of gubbermint restriction to the process does NOTHING to keep folks like that from buying. it only infringes on our constitutional rights. Restrictive gun laws do very little to prevent crime.Beiruty wrote:CHL is fine with me. Do you like to sell a pistol to wana be bank robber? or rapper, or just old gang banger?

Since this thread is already derailed...
What is the typical FFL fee? Is it $20 to the seller then the FFL ships it for "free" and then the buyer in the next town pays $20 too?

Re: Selling a handgun in Texas
I have paid as little as 10 bucks and as much as 25. I have heard of folks paying 40-50, but I would not pay that much. I get the impression that some places would prefer not to do them so they bump the price up instead of saying no. There is a thread on this forum that lists FFL guys willing to do xfrs for nominal fees. http://www.texasshooting.com/TexasCHL_F ... m.php?f=22" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;Hos wrote:Since this thread is already derailed...

There are a minimum number of posts that you have to make before discusing what kind of gun you are trying to selllws380 wrote:Don't ask him to break the minimum post rules!

This is exactly what the liberals don't get....03Lightningrocks wrote:People like you just mentioned buy guns through straw purchases. Well, in all fairness, when I asked him what he was trying to sell, I figured he was going to say what he had along with a price. However, I was not paying any attention at the time to his post count (this is one of the few boards I frequent with min post count requirements). But it's not like I was intentionally trying to get him to violate the rules.Rockrz wrote:There are a minimum number of posts that you have to make before discusing what kind of gun you are trying to sell![]()

How many posts do you have to have before talking about selling something?
