Krav ROCKS!!!! my oldest and I are currently taking karate through
http://www.christiansoldierskarateonline.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; which was started by J Pat Burleson. One of the guys Bart Brooks, who studied under him (I believe) started the christiansoldierskarate program and then later started doing Krav where I have gotten more of a taste of it (he would share some stuff in the karate class). I am waiting until my oldest is old enough to take it with me (you have to be 16).
I highly recommend
http://krav-magatexas.com/main/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; in the Saganaw area!!!!
Good job on on the letter. We need more people that use their talents to advance pro gun understanding.

Most people who think about concealed carry at all think of it as a male issue. Many of them outright think it is a redneck issue. They simply don't think that women have CHLs or an interest in firearms.

Good call. That's enough to convince me! Personally I think women have far more stake in this then I do. I'm 6', over 200 pounds. I'm far more worried about my 5' 1" girlfriend. She's at least taking Krav Maga self defense classes with me, but we're still working on the whole "A gun is a lot better then your fists when you're facing a 6' 4" potential rapist." part.
There were a lot of women in my class and there all were shooting .45 cal

... so much for just a male issue

Got a call from the paper today. They're running it in Thursday's edition, theoretically without editing it down.
I'll post up a link when its online.

TxRVer wrote:Today's article about the benefits of self defense was excellent. However, it neglected the best defense from muggings, rapes, and mass murders such as the Virginia Tech tragedy: Allowing Concealed Handgun License holders to legally carry on campus. To obtain a CHL, you must be 21 with no criminal record or history of mental illness, undergo a background check by the state, submit fingerprints to the FBI, and attend an 8 hour class teaching conflict resolution, laws concerning concealed carry, and pass a shooting proficiency test. Statistics show the small portion of Texans willing to undergo the process required for a CHL are far less likely to commit a crime of any sort than the average citizen, while criminals will break any law necessary to achieve their goals. The current law prohibiting weapons on campus do not stop criminals, only those who obey the law. Allowing concealed carry on campus is not a "free pass" for anyone to bring a gun to class. It simply allows faculty, staff, and students who already legally carry almost everywhere else to protect themselves in institutions of higher learning as well. A person should not be forced to forfeit their right to protection to obtain an education.
Great letter. I just added one spelling correction in red.
Disregard this. Grammar is correct. Great letter. Change ONLY the 8 to a 10 (hour class) and send it.

I'm glad you have decided to submit an editorial to your College newspaper. I am a Grad student at Texas A&M-CC and our school newspaper is left of Hugo Chavez and would never publish something with this as a subject. It's hard being the only person in my department who is not liberal/radical and also uses any common sense. Hope it gets in your paper. Good Luck.

Hey - idea....
English majors unite or untie...
Create letters (let's keep a 250 and a 500 word limit) about Texas CHL. We have a start....never know when it might be YOU!!!

I am happy to hear some people are doing something at Aggie Land. I am attending A&M next year (getting another degree) and have my CHL as well. I hope some change will be made before then but who knows. Good luck to you, I hope this works out in the end.

And the first naysayer crawls out of the woodwork to make comments!
If concealed handguns had been legal at Virginia Tech, and police or security knew the shooter had a weapon, they would have to wait until he started shooting to stop him.
If everyone on campus had had a gun then you would have had a circular firing squad and more people dead.
CHL holders are just as likely to commit a crime as anyone else. Yes, I've seen the DPS statistics. Look closely, they are manipulated to create the illusion that you describe. The Brady Campaign website says gun crime increased 81% after the concealed weapon law went into effect.
The second amendment has been around for 200 years and America is no safer because of it. It's time to repeal the second amendment and excercise strict gun control.
My response:

I edited the rest of your comment out because it is merely opinion, and I cannot provide facts to refute opinion.
I am curious though, that you'd consider the DPS statistics manipulated, but trust statistics from the Brady Campaign, who's stated goal is to ban guns? I'm sure their statistics aren't biased at all, right? If I quoted statistics from the NRA, they would be blatant lies, but the Brady Campaign tells the truth correct?
Statistics from advocacy groups, from either side, cannot be trusted. So lets go with some facts from the Florida Department of State:
"Since Florida adopted right-to-carry in 1987, its homicide, firearm homicide, and handgun homicide rates have decreased 36%, 37%, and 41%, respectively, while the national homicide rate decreased 0.4% and firearm and handgun homicide rates increased 15% and 24%, respectively. Less than two one-hundredths of 1% of Florida carry licenses have been revoked because of firearm crimes committed by licensees."
Please take the time to investigate actual crime rates and facts before stating unfounded accusations based upon emotion, not reason.
