Being in traffic for my job, and having read the traffic 'bible', the MUTCD, many times, I'm not so certain that those 'night' signs are legally enforcable.

I'd have to look them up specifically, but for some reason, I recall reading something once about the requirement of speed limit signs that would make them invalid. It might have been something about it being Black Text on a white sign, rather than the reverse or something.

I'll look it up when I get back to the office today if I have time.
I may be completely remembering it wrong, but I'll do some additional investigation.

The MOST FAMOUS Texas speed trap ever - at Segovia Truck Stop on I-10 outside of Junction is now either 75 or 80 until the Kerr County Line near Kerrville. Those poor DPS guys just can't get a break. I have a 3 ticket collection from there; wife had 5 by the time they upped the limit.

I wonder if there being a lower speed limit at "night" and it not being posted is no excuse.

I mean how many times have we heard: "Ignorance of the law is no excuse."?

Like other traffic laws, there are things we "should" know even if not posted correct?
Like passing on a double line, etc, etc.

Really not much advice on your route from East Dallas. Once you get on the freeway, it is 650 miles without a signal light. I'd make sure you stopped for gas in the Midland-Odessa area. The merge with I-10 is west of this area. Good luck on this important trip.

Some laws are universal, like your passing on a double line example. Night-time speed limit differences are not universal. Some roads drop the limit at night, but some do not. Not even all stretches of interstate highways have lower speed limits at night. It would be unreasonable to expect anyone, much less everyone, to know what roads do or do not have lower speed limits at night, if they are not posted.

That being said, it is not a defense to say, "I didn't see a sign" that was posted. You can be ignorant that the sign was there and be guilty.
