Even on the liberal side, Lyndon Johnson as a Senator had far greater accomplishments than did Ted Kennedy. Arguably Chuck Shumer has as well. And then there is Byrd out of W. VA. Don't really know if he is "liberal", since he used to be in the KKK, but he is a Democrat and arguably achieved more than Teddy. But none of them were a Kennedy.

As to the rest of it, I feel sorry for his family. I'll just leave it at that.

A lot of those people are Democrats because "Lincoln freed the slaves" and Lincoln was Republican.stroo wrote:Don't really know if he is "liberal", since he used to be in the KKK, but he is a Democrat
Before anyone says if a politician is "liberal" they should define what "liberal" means to them. A lot of the current (D) power base think socialism is "liberal" even though it's obvious those policies are directly opposed to economic freedom.

On the upside, Kennedy didn't get what he wanted, and Democrats are now 1 vote shy of a filibuster-proof majority.Kythas wrote:At least he didn't get the law in Mass. changed back to allowing the governor to appoint a Senator to a missing seat.
If you don't know, Kennedy was instrumental in getting the law changed when Kerry was running for President and Romney was governor. Democrats in Mass. took away the power of the governor to appoint a Senator to a missing Senate seat, afraid that if Kerry won, Romney would appoint a Republican Senator to replace him.
In the last few weeks, as Kennedy's health was failing, he was lobbying to reinstate that power to the Governor since Mass. now has a Democrat governor.
Hypocrisy of the highest order, if you ask me, and further proof that the Democrat party is concerned with one thing and one thing only - power, consolidation of power, and the keeping of power once they have it.
OK, that's three things.

On the other hand, now you have the libtard machine firing up a "win one for the Gipper" campaign. Democrats make me want to puke sometimes. They will stop at nothing to achieve their goal of supreme control over all Americans. Even a dead colleague is to be used as an asset. Sickening...simply sickening.

Re: Its Been a great Summer
Well, not all newspapers are liberal and screen out controversial letters. This was printed as a Letter to the Editor in my hometown news. Apparently it was written prior to his death, but not printed until today. A lot of interesting facts.
Edward Kennedy not so great an American
To the Editor,
Have you heard? Senator Ted Kennedy, the black sheep of the Kennedy family, the most unscrupulous political dynasty in American history, is resigning due to poor heath, and his doctors say the prognosis isn’t good for a long and happy retirement. As soon as it was announced he had cancer, the liberal, mainstream media immediately began his canonization, calling him a “Great America.”
Since no one wants to speak ill of the dead, I say we should clear up a few things about his illustrious career while he’s alive, before the facts are twisted and history gets re-written by the liberal media. The following are a few facts about “Old Kennedy.” (As he refers to himself.)
(1) While attending Harvard, he was expelled twice, once for cheating on a test and once for paying a classmate to cheat for him.
(2) While expelled, Kennedy enlisted in the Army, but he mistakenly signed up for four years instead of two. (OOPS) But not to worry, his father, Joseph P. Kennedy, former U.S. Ambassador to England (a step up from bootlegging liquor into the U.S. from Canada during prohibition) pulled the necessary strings to have his enlistment shortened to two years. He also served in Europe, not Korea, where a war was raging. (No preferential treatment for him, like he accused President Bush of receiving.) He was assigned to Paris, never advancing above the rank of private.
(3) While attending law school at the University of Virginia, he was cited for reckless driving four times, including once where he was clocked driving 90-miles-per-hour in a residential neighborhood with his headlights off after dark. Yet amazingly, his Virginia driver’s license was never revoked. Just as amazing he passed the bar exam in 1959.
(4) In 1964, he was seriously injured and hospitalized for several months after the small plane he was flying crashed. Tests done by the hospital at the time he was admitted had shown he was legally intoxicated, but the results of those tests remained a state secret until the 1980s when the report was unsealed.
(5) On July 19, 1969, Kennedy attended a party on Chappaquiddick Island in Massachusetts. At about 11 p.m., he borrowed his chauffeur’s keys to his Oldsmobile limousine and offered to give a campaign worker, Mary Jo Kopechne, a ride home. Leaving the island via an unlit bridge with no guardrail, he steered the car off the bridge and flipped it upside down in Poucha Pond He swam to shore and walked back to the party, passing up several houses and a fire station. Two friends then returned with him to the scene. According to their later testimony, they told him what he already knew; that he was required by law to immediately report the accident to authorities. Instead, Kennedy made his way to a hotel, called his lawyer, and went to sleep. By the time he called the police the next morning, the wreck had already been discovered. Investigators at the scene said Mary Jo Kopechne had lived for awhile after the accident, scratching at the upholstered floor above her head in the upside down car until she ran out of air and suffocated.
(6) The Kennedy family began calling in favors, ensuring that any inquiry would be squashed. Her corpse was whisked out-of-state to her family, and the cover-up was complete when no sobriety tests or autopsies were performed. It was widely assumed that Kennedy was drunk, but he was allowed to plead guilty to leaving the scene of an accident and was given a SUSPENDED SENTENCE OF TWO MONTHS. (Try getting a deal like that in Butler County.) But I can understand how the judge might have felt compassion for poor Teddy, after all, his aspirations for becoming president had just drowned with the “blonde in the pond.”
Kennedy has held his Senate seat for over 40 years, but considering his longevity, his accomplishments are scant. In his very first Senate role he was floor manager for the bill that turned U.S. immigration policy upside down and opened the floodgate for immigrants from third world countries. Since that time he has been the prime instigator , and author of every expansion and increase in immigration, up to and including his attempt two years ago to grant amnesty to all illegal aliens.
The man is apparently without shame. Having the morals of an alley cat, and a reputation as a loud, boisterous, public drunk who disrespects women, he piously grilled the last two conservative Supreme Court nominees as if he was the nation’s standard bearer for virtue.
“Old Kennedy’s” track record is more a “Profile in cowardice” than a “Great American.” Let’s not allow the spin doctors to turn him into a national hero after he’s gone.

Re: Its Been a great Summer
Ted's name came up twice at a town hall meeting hosted by Kevin Brady that I attended last night. An early question had to do with the Dems wanting to put Kennedy's name on the health care bill. The person asking the question said something about "he's gone now to someplace none of us want to follow" - I probably don't have the quote exactly right, the implication was that he's in Hell. Brady gave pretty much the same answer you've heard from other politicians, "we didn't agree on much" and so forth. Then he said that he thought the best tribute would be to extend a health plan like Kennedy's to everyone, not to destroy the current health care system. Then, as the meeting closed, someone yelled "Remember Mary Jo Kopechne".
I didn't really think the "he's in Hell" or the "remember Mary Jo" comments were appropriate for a health care town hall, but I certainly won't miss his presence in the Senate.
OTOH - he had a terrible disease that I wouldn't wish on anyone. One of my coworkers is fighting a brain tumor, and it's terrible to watch. This had been a vital, intelligent person, and he's being slowly destroyed from within. The worst part is that he knows what's happening - his mind is going, and he knows it.
It's looking likely that the Massachusetts political establishment is going to change the law AGAIN so that they can keep as many Democrats in the Senate as possible. That is disgusting and so completely transparent that even Chris Matthews can see it. Not that he'll speak against it, of course.
edit: the word filters replaced the proper place name for the opposite of Heaven with the word 'heck' for me.

I will add, as a fifth circumstance in the situation of the House of Representatives, restraining them from oppressive measures, that they can make no law which will not have its full operation on themselves and their friends, as well as on the great mass of the society. - J Madison, Federalist #57

Teddy Kennedy was a scumbag. He was a drunkard, a killer, a liar and even a traitor. But I still don't think that celebrating his death is proper.

Where did I say voting republican is a litmus test for being a racist? I implied that Byrd was a racist and stated that he is a Democrat which arguably makes him liberal. I happen to be a proud Republican and am certainly not a racist.
