Yep, shot placement is the key.

Wait, you're saying .38sp is OK, but no on 9mm? How do you figure?

EDIT: oh wait. Now I see. I thought you'd said "forget the 9mm". Carry on!

I saw that show a few days ago. I don't know much about hunting period, but thought it was very interesting. So, if a friend says he has a hog problem on his property and invites me to shoot with him I'm a little fuzzy on a couple of things.

1. Do I need a hunting license if I'm on private property, but not my property?
2. Why can't one harvest the meat?

Outdoors. Preferably not in the city.
Whats the danger level?
Depends on how close you let 'em get. They don't generally have any ranged weapons.
Do you need a permit?
Just a hunting license.
Can I use a handgun?
If you can put them down reliably with it. .22WMR will do the job in the right spot, (just behind and below the ear if you get a good side-on shot) but I've heard of head-on hits with 00 buck at rock-throwing distance failing to stop them quick enough.

KD5NRH, maybe I'm just a bit dense tonight, but if I'm with a friend on their property do I still need a hunting license?

Sidro said the meat could not be kept. Does anyone know why?

The TP&W site now states that you must have a valid hunting license to hunt feral hogs. What i referred to on not being able to harvest the meat of nuisance game goes back to the animal doing crop damage and land owner being able to eradicate them legally (and/or agent thereof) does not have to have a license in this case. This is called depredation control. To harvest meat from the animal you must have a valid license. So if you want to eat what you shoot buy a license otherwise it is illegal. My source is a retired state warden who now works as a private game warden.

Okay. I guess that's no big deal. I've never been hunting and have never purchased a hunting license. I've talked about doing this with the friend that has the problem and I didn't think I would need one if I was on his land.
