I am glad that you paid attention in school.

I would be more concerned about the slide, frame and magazines becoming slightly magnetized and attracting metal particles. The metal particles could stick and cause the gun to wear. I suppose if you cleaned it well, the particles would be wiped away. It's a novel idea, but I still prefer a holster of some kind.

Maybe the magnet is strong enough to hold onto a metal beltclip that is attached to a fabric holster?

Here's another attempt with an UM clip-on holster. This is NOT the holster I would use since it doesn't have a retention strap.
But you get the idea of clipping it onto the seat-edge trim.

It looks like the magnet is encapsulated in some Kydex-like plastic. Is that correct?

Yes, it's coated.

I agree. The easiest way to defeat the force of a magnet is to hit it at a 90 degree angle from the pull. In other words, you may not be able to easily pull it straight away from the magnet, but you can easily slide it free of the magnet. So in the case of an accident, it will probably slide forward and free of the magnet's hold.

It is an interesting idea for securing a gun in a car though...

Unless you are Jack Bauer I don't think you will need a gun directly after getting into a car accident

Or an FBI agent in Miami.

Even if you didn't need it directly after the crash, it would be nice if you and your passengers didn't get knocked in the head with it.

Seriously, I think it would stay pretty secure in a minor fender bender. Any major accident has the possibility of dislodging the firearm no matter where it may be secured, I think.

Quite frankly, I think you have one of the best solutions I've seen. Like you, I have a Taurus, don't care so much about the finish as it's a "work" gun. As long as I can torque the thing off the magnet, I would be happy. Don't know if it will work in my Mustang, but I'm certainly going to have a look. I appreciate you sharing the information!

Here's the improved system. (Thanks to the suggestions of another member!)

Not perfected yet, but a quick "let's try this".

A left hand Uncle Mike's will work better (if they make'em), but happened to have a right hander in the misc. parts box.

Drilled three holes through the left side big enough to get screw heads through.
Used washers inside the holster and shimmed the right side with rubber doughnuts.
Covered the screw heads with a scrap piece of material.

I still might pick up a cheap, left hand holster so the retention snap is on the outside, but you get the idea.

The holster attracts attention unless hidden. One good thing about the magnet is nobody will notice it when the gun isn't there.
