I just got off the phone with Gene who is the compliance officer in the Central Texas office. He looked at the Paramount license info and says the bar area is NOT diagrammed off. Looks like I won't be going there until and if the sign is taken down.
I am filing a complaint with TABC based on probable percentage alcohol sales as well as poor placement of the sign. Unless they've moved the sign since I was there, it's easy to never see it.

This not like a 30.06 sign though. If they are actually receiving >51% of their income from alcohol sales then they cannot take down the sign. Do you expect them to limit sales at the bar just so they at not 51%? Someplace posted 30.06 I won't patronize but a 51 sign is different. I remember a bar in my small home town that served the best burgers within 20 miles. I'd disarm to have lunch there.
If the 51 sign is in error, then that's an entirely different matter.

But of course it's not like a30.06 sign. I was not trying to say they should take it down if they do receive 51% of sales from alcohol. But they should take it down if they receive 50% or less.
My complaint has been sent to TABC. It cites the probability that with tickets costing at least $10 each (and upwards of $35 for cheap seats for the big shows), drinks averaging $6 each, and not all patrons buying drinks, it would not be possible for the Paramount to be a 51% establishment. I also complained about where the sign was located...impossible to see until your ticket has been taken and you actually "belly up to the bar".

I can't help but think the same thing. Indeed the tickets for major shows run $35 -- $100+ each. Also, the "bar" sells soft drinks, popcorn, candy, etc. in addition to alcohol and they may very well be lumping all bar sales together.

So, did Gene say they were listed as a 51% venue per the license, but it was for the whole location?

K. I'm with you on filing the challenge on the license. Unless they sell a couple of bottles of
this.

I've been to the Paramount in recent years for first permiere movies, and due to the small seats and lack of leg room have taken a vow to never return no matter what is showing. Was not carrying back then but now with it posted it doubles my imperative of seeking good times at other establishments.
It was a great historic theatre in its day but now my comfort factor requires better facility.
