My 336 serves dual purposes. It is a home defense gun and a fun shooter. I don't hunt but if I did the .30-30 will handle anything I'm are likely to encounter in Texas. For home defense I load with Federal 125gr FNJHP. For fun I shoot cast bullets at reduced velocities. The .30-30 is a 200 yard gun so a scope isn't mandatory I put a Williams peep sight on mine.

Remington 700 is a great choice for hunting. There are quite a few lever action rifles that could do everything from home defense to hunting.

Love the 30-30
Got within half inch groups on my 336 last weekend @ psc on the 100 yard with hornady leverevolution. Love this rifle.
