Those at Home Depot are permanently installed 10KW and larger with transfer switches and auto-start on many of them. Here is a 6KW portable that is propane (LPG) and gasoline, but would be easy to convert to Natural Gas if you wanted to change the system over.

Thanks Keith. I have noticed that some of the power companies like TXU, etc will install permanent auto-start generators for around the $10K range.

Yeah, my brother did an extensive remodel on his house in Virginia and had a 15KW NG unit with auto-start/transfer installed. While it wasn't cheap, it has paid off for him 3-4 times already in a couple of years. It even has a load system that will take items off of the load and allow priority circuits to use the generator when they need the power.

I like my 20k nat gas unit. $12,000 installed. It is backed up by a 5k (max load) gasoline portable that cost $600 at Home Depot. This small backup is hard wired to 4 rooms in the house with dedicated drops and outlets and a window unit in the master bedroom (one of my fun projects). I don't expect to be without power, but you never know. A tree fell on a guy's 24k unit and smashed it to bits the day after the huricane, at the beginning of a 8 day outage on his block.

These were going for $150 at auction down here...

Thats the minimum bid. All gov liquidation auctions say $150 until the second bid. Usually the most bidding happens about 45 mins before auction closing. One thing I really like about GL is that they don't allow bid sniping. I've never understood why eBay still allows it.

Oh, I know. I've seen them go on first bid in the past. It's not common, but it happens.
