Gave up my bike last April, too, but it wasn't my choice. Had someone in the far right lane decide they needed to be in the far left lane RIGHT NOW!, crossed three lanes of traffic, and took me out. Totaled my bike and almost cost me a leg in the process (doctor said there'd be a 50/50 chance of my coming out of surgery with no leg above the knee). I'm lucky though because I wasn't geared up at all. Was wearing a t-shirt and no helmet and got taken out at about 50 mph. Got some road rash on my left cheek, left shoulder, and left leg. I'd be missing all the flesh on the fleshy part of my left hand if it weren't for my glove. As it is, since my gloves were fingerless, the side of my thumb that wasn't covered by leather was ground to the bone.
As much as I loved riding, I love all my limbs and mental faculties intact more.
If you're going to ride, gear up 100% of the time and BE CAREFUL.

Guess I picked the wrong time to buy my wife a scooter (Piaggio 250cc MP3) for her birthday.
She completed the course for her motorcycle license this weekend and will take the written test at the DPS tomorrow.
