I think some of y'all need to go out and shoot some wood with your magnum loads and 3" shells. If you fire one of those off in your house, you and anyone else in the house will be deaf and you'll need to resheetrock most of the house. I have some magnum shells in mine for a while, but 1 day while at a private range, we did some 'sperimentin and I decided that low recoil or reduced recoil 00 buck would be more then sufficient. Eventually, I'll have some #4 buck loaded up in some light loads for home defense.

Just finishing upgrading the Maverick 88 with the Knoxx recoil stock w/powerpak, 18.5" Vent Ribbed barrel with Truglo sights and next forend changed out. First two rounds are bird shot, because I have to grab this baby alot this time of year for the snakes around here. Then three more #00 buck with more on the saddle to put in with a mix of #4, #00, bird shot. Will get rid of the bird shot by summer if snakes stop showing up.

Sometimes it's a Good Thing to have some extra penetration, like if the bad guy is behind cover such as heavy furniture or a solid door. If you keep your cool, and place your shots while remaining aware of your surroundings and what's behind your target, you should be okay. I'd rather replace some sheetrock than not have the BG go down because he's firing at me from behind cover.

Just my two cents of course...your mileage may vary.

It's a defense shotgun...as I use it on duty sometimes. I usually load it with (in order of how they will be fired) Buck Buck Buck Slug Slug. We have Benelli M4s which sure are quick and smooth IMO. I still prefer the AR platform as a patrol rifle (different discussion).

If anyone is curious....I stack the Benelli mag in order of increasing penetration, for a subj behind some form of cover...my last two rounds (before a tactical reload) will be the most penetrating. We can load it however we want.

Any of you #4 buck users have any data on those rounds as far as effectiveness and/or penetration? I like the slightly larger spread I get from #4 buck (5-inch to 9-inch spread with 2 3/4 00 buck at 15 yards depending on brand; 15-inch spread with Remington Express #4 buck). But I wonder if it's as effective at stopping an attacker? It's certainly not something I'd want to be shot with in the open, but I'm wondering if has any effectiveness beyond some form of cover or will it just stop in sheetrock walls or heavy doors?

I'm wondering if a stacked mag tube of #4 buck and slugs might be a decent way to go? My shotgun is loaded with 00 buck, but I'm experimenting with different loads to see if I like something else better.

I've got my 1300 Defender loaded with 2 3/4" Remington Managed Recoil 00 buckshot. 7 in the tube and one in the pipe, 5 more in a side saddle. I have been thinking about getting some Aguila Mini-shotshells in 00 buck. I like the idea of putting 13 round in my shotgun

Hornady TAP Personal Defense 12GA. 00 buck.


Tighter pattern then Remington 00 buck.

I'm also interested in the answer to this question. I use #4 in my shotgun but all this "00 buck" talk has me thinking maybe it's time to change.

I like #4 because it's so versatile. I have found it to be the perfect load against small varmints like skunks and armadillos. So keeping #4 in my shotgun means I can use it for BGs as well as varmints.

The OO will take care of armadillos and skunks too. I have always used a .22 or a 9mm for varmints the shot gun makes a big mess I think.

For me, #1 Buck offered a very reasonable compromise between # of pellets per round, and caliber. It offers 37.5% more shot than 00 Buck while offering a .30 caliber projectile.

And in that article is my justification for using #1 Buck:
"In all shotshell loads, number 1 buckshot produces more potentially effective wound trauma than either #00 or #000 buck. In addition, number 1 buck is less likely to over-penetrate and exit an attacker's body."

When my 870 sat next to my bed in my old place I had it loaded with WInchester double magnums. Some Federal steel BB shots as well. These are old shells, but lately I've just put the full size PX4 in my night stand, although reading this thread is making me want to buy some new shotgun ammo. I live in an apartment so it's close quarters.
