I agree with you here, however the Springfield XD9 I bought at the Gun Show was literally $200 cheaper than it was at The Arms Room (the only local gun shop I know of in Clear Lake/League City). I don't mind paying a slight premium for good service, knowledge and helping out the small business person, but not going to pay an excessive over charge.

Im all for supporting local gun shops, but they need to be competitive as well. Why should i pay an extra $100-$200 for something? I understand that they usually and hopefully have knowledgeable people, but with so much information available online, that knowledge is not worth it for me to pay a premium. Ill support the local gun shops by buying accessories and maybe ammo. Going to the arms room this weekend to check out the new place and purchase/install night sights .

Annoyed (and others) - have you ever casually mentioned to the sales-sheeple/management that their policy was RIDICULOUS and it *might* be entirely possible, that as a CHL holder, you *might* already have a pistola on you? And that it really was a waste of time? Sheeeeesh....that's crazy. Talk about NOT "connecting" the dots.....hmmmmm, there's "Elmer Fudd" working the gun counter....customer comes up and buys gun, shows TX CHL, fills out Form 4473, pays for gun, etc....does the lightbulb *not* go on in "Elmer Fudd's" head that maybe, just maybe, the customer already has a gun on him/her?

Here's one that'll get ya mad, it did me...

I once bought a used gun from a pawn shop.
Did all the paper work, paid for the gun, then, the lady asks if I have a gun lock (trigger lock). I said "no".
She then informs me that due to ATF rules, they cannot let me leave the store with an "unsecured" firearm.

She graciously offers to sell me one of theirs for $4. I said "can't you just put one on and let me take the gun
to my truck and then I'll bring your lock back in to you?" She said "No, we can't do that but if you want to come
back with your own lock we'll hold the gun for you".

I told them that I didn't appreciate them trying to nickle and dime me over a $4 lock
and told them "you keep the gun and give me my money back".

Well, they gave me the lock and I told them that I won't be shopping there anymore.

These days the only pawn shop I do business with is Tomball Pawn.
They have never required me to lock a gun before I leave with it.

This was before I had my CHL so that would have been illegal.

I went by Academy yesterday.Twice. The first time was in the morning after helping some people from church empty out their storage unit and taking an old couch to another church lady's house. I just happened to drive by Academy and decided to stop in because my little brother wanted a sling shot and I've been looking for a single shot shotgun that's lighter and easier to handle for my brothers or a girl than my decked out for HD 870. I found a nice one, only $130, and decided to buy it, but I knew I'd need 4 credit card statements because of my Green Card, and I didn't have them with me. So I went to work, skipped out early, and returned with DL, CHL, GC, 4 statements with current address (to prove residency), under the false assumption that just because all this worked everywhere I've ever purchased a gun, that it would work at Academy. Ironically, as I was walking up, a salesperson was handing a .22 rifle to a kid no older than 10 at the door. (Kid had his mom with him, gun was out of brown box though). I just kinda smiled as I walked by.

I soon quit smiling. First they couldn't figure out what to do with a GC. Then they couldn't figure out what to do with a GC and a CHL. Then they couldn't read the requirement list that states major credit card statements are sufficient (I had to point to the text on the "acceptable forms of proof of residency" list). Then their manager told them they can't accept it ever again, but they can make an exception this time. Then they don't think that the CHL can let me skip the NICS check because I have a GC. As if I didn't have to pass a background check to get the CHL. ...and I knew where that was going as soon as they said (after asking 5 different people) that they had to call in the background check. Yeah, I have never been instantly approved, maybe something to do with being a legal resident alien. So after almost an hour I walk out of the store empty handed waiting to get approved on a background check.

The amount of forms I had to sign was annoying too. I would support local gun shops but, except for the one that opened up across the street from my house (which didn't have what I wanted), there aren't really any. I'm semi-seriously considering driving over to Cabela's and using that $50 gift card I have laying around somewhere and then politely informing Academy why I won't be purchasing the gun from them SINCE I'LL ALREADY HAVE ONE.

...Nevermind, just called and the only thing like that at my local Cabela's is $799.00.

*sigh*

As for them walking you out, the older gentleman at Cabela's who was walking me out when I bought my 642 told me it was so that if I decide to kill myself that it doesn't get the store messy. He mentioned two previous instances where someone bought a gun, ammo, and a ride to the other side. I don't remember if it was at that specific store or at others.

"Annoyed" is my natural state. Of course I pointed it out.

But, "ANGRY" is not my natural state, so I didn't berate the sales clerk. He doesn't make Cabelas policy, and he was just doing his job. I jokingly pointed out how silly it was, for the reasons you mentioned, and he (a very nice retired cop, by the way, and not exactly "Elmer Fudd") chuckled and agreed with me. We both rolled our eyes at the stupidity of it all, put that aside, and concluded the transaction.

Since I like Cabelas in a general way, and I don't want to wear out my welcome with the staff - one of whom is a friend of mine and Crossfire's husband - I saw no profit in burning my social bridges behind me.

Well, on the one hand I appreciate the stores that sell firearms, and make it a big part of their promotions.
Academy is the best of the all-purpose sports stores in this regard.
But all the big ones make you do the Walk of Shame when you buy a gun.
Most of my gun purchases are Cabelas or Academy.
I have to really want the gun in question to do that. I'll buy it elsewhere as a first choice, FTF preferred.

Speaking of supporting your local gun store - I am tickled to death with the prices, service and atmosphere of ACE of PAWNS in Rusk.

Not only does Austin and Tom welcome you with a smile, they will order what they don't have. BTW, Austin just passed his CHL Instructor requirements to go along with his NRA certificate. His first CHL class is on 10 July. Knowing Austin as I have come to, his class will be a good one. He says he's too young to skate through it.
