I worked at a motel many moons ago.
This is a good solution.
We had guests who left the DND sign out for days and sometimes a week.
We were more than happy not to service their room.
A DND sign is respected. And, by leaving instructions with the front desk,
your request is reinforced.

Lot's of luck on that. Worked on a new plant startup once with 9 other guys. Half of us worked at night and slept in the daytime. Nothing we posted on the door kept the maids from banging on our doors , waking us up, to try to come in and clean the room. The manager couldn't seem to do anything about it, either. This went on for 2 solid weeks, until we went on days. Don't know how the other 5 guys made out after that, but I suspect it was more of the same.

The motel needs to cost more than $9.99.
The staff must speak English.

drop by a ymca or some other place like that...they have lockers and you can bring a lock and lock it up....

Yo tengo muchos amigos que son de México y ellos no les gustan cuando personas están insensibles, especialmente cuando ellos pueden hablar Ingles mejor que mucha gente. Debes usar las palabras "no se permite entrar".

The YMCAs I've visited are posted, not sure if it's a corporate thing.

Im sure you have already made your trip by now but this might help the next guy going to a military base to do some work. I would not secretly carry on a military base if I were you...bad idea if your a civilian (you wont be allowed on that military base anymore if caught) and even worse idea if you are in the military (NJP). 99% of all state-side military bases have armories for the security force which are used for personnel on the base as well. When you approach the gate tell the sentry that you have a weapon that you would like to put in the armory and they will simply escort you to the armory where your weapon can be safely locked away until you return for it. That simple...takes about 10 minutes.

Danpaw's point, while not PC, is a realistic reflection of much of our labor force.

As an example, those responsible for picking up the trash on Wed and Sat at my home kept leaving the emptied trash receptacles in front of our automated gate - thus blocking it. I created a sign in English politely requesting they leave the emptied receptacles on the other side of the gate.

Response: They kept leaving them in front of the automated gate.

Next attempt at communication was the same information printed in Spanish.

This attempt at communication was successful...

As for Danpaw being insensitive, I have another perspective.

When people travel to foreign lands it's incumbent upon them to be culturally sensitive to the host country.

America is the only country I'm aware of whereby cultural sensitivity is reversed...
