dewayneward wrote:The next worst thing is reaching for your gun in a situation like the one you described with 3 potentially dangerous opponents up close in an F250 and finding one of those really light, easy to carry / easy to conceal .25's or .380's in your holster while that heavy old uncomfortable 1911 sits uselessly back in the home gun safe.
I laughed out loud when I read this because I own a 1911 and a .25. There are days where I just "run out" and grab the .25 because I am ALWAYS armed. When I grab the .25 I always think (this will be the day that something happens and I'll have THIS pea shooter). in all fairness, the 1911 is on me 99% of the time.
I'm right there with ya. I've got a .40 and a .45, both of which I've spent a lot of time and money selecting/purchasing, practicing with, choosing just the right defensive ammo for, accumulating holsters and spare magazines for . . . and if/when I need a gun, I'll probably have my little .22 Mag mini-revolver.

I am very glad this worked out for you. I can empathize with your feelings. Back when I lived in condition white all the time, I interrupted a person breaking into an ATM. He pulled a gun on me and luckily nothing happened. The feeling of helplessness is amazing and will haunt you for a long time. Now I have my CHL and NEVER leave home without being armed.
Hold onto the memory and remember this always. It will keep you thinking twice before you leave every day to check your weapon.

Glad everything turned out okay. Just gives me another reason to go buy a lockbox that i can keep in my car and keep a back up weapon in case one is not physically on me. I wish i could keep a shotgun under the seat but i drive a maxima. Good job on being aware of what was going on.

I always have a back up PF9 and a SIG 556 with 2 full mags in my truck. Alternating JHP and V-MAX ammo.
The thought is to use my XD45 carry to fight to my rifle. After that, if I run out of ammo, I am in a world of bad stuff.
I refuse to be underarmed.

glad everything worked out for you, and rule number 3 is really important if you can carry then carry! glad everything turned out for the best

Wow...scary story. That's the reason I keep my "truck gun" in the truck at all times. It's nothing special and if my truck gets broken in to and it gets stolen I'm not out a whole lot and the NRA will buy me another one.

Glad everything turned out ok.
As in my somewhat similar encounter, I also came to the conclusion that it's better to have my gun and not need it, than need it and not have it. Luckily, I was carrying at the time and will carry 24/7 forever.
Remember, there's only one way for an encounter like this to be put in the "Win" column - you went home alive after it was over. Therefore, count this engagement as a "Win".
Here's to hoping your plastic comes soon.

Your situation is almost as bad as having your BUG only on you and facing multiple possible assailants. Ever since I had that happen I've been carrying at least my main carry every time it's possible.

On my first day as an LEO, I left the off duty gun I had just purchased in my NYC apartment to go to the neighborhood deli for a couple of items. I missed being one of the victims of a 3-man armed robbery by just a couple of minutes only because I didn't want to go out again, but my wife eventually convinced me. In those days, the BG's in NYC favored executing anyone found with a badge in his pocket (which I had and didn't think anything of until I realized how close a call I'd had).
I haven't needed any convincing to carry whenever it's legal after that.
That and many other experiences with lots of crazy mean people helped me realize that there's a lot to be said for consistently carrying the biggest, most powerful gun that can be concealed under whatever I'm wearing and enough spare mags for at least 1 reload, preferably 2 or more.
Still, every time I go to a gun show, I always am drawn to pick up a little Ruger LCP. I admire the engineering, and I think what a great little pocket gun it would make, and how easy and comfortable it would be to carry and hide. Then I think a little more, and the thought line runs something like this:
If I buy it, for sure I'd end up carrying it instead of those other big, heavy, inconvenient guns. (I can be as lazy as the next guy when I let myself get away with it.)
If I end up carrying it almost all the time, the reality is that's all I'd have to work with if I had to reach for it on a really bad day.
Then I sigh a bit, put the cute, light, convenient little LCP down on the exhibitor's table, and go on lugging around those big, heavy, inconvenient guns and reloads I'd much prefer to have really handy if I should encounter another bad day.

I'm not an LEO nor have I ever played one on TV, but I go through the same thing with the LCP. It just seems like a sweet little gun.
This, at the time I'm upgrading my carry from 9mm to 45ACP. Go figure.

Me too with the LCP, especially wanted the Coyote edition. Just seems like such a good idea if I ever were to really, really need to conceal a firearm.

Excaliber, I'm glad you wrote that. I've been experimenting with different carry positions for my Sig P226. It's a full sized service weapon, so it's not easy to conceal. I keep thinking that maybe I need a smaller gun. After reading what you wrote, I'm thinking maybe I need to do a better job of finding ways to conceal the Sig. If I have to spend a little extra to do that well, it will be worth it if I'm ever in one of those situations.
Now, being able to legally carry, that's another issue entirely. It seems the State of Texas is bound and determined to never issue me a license.

A smaller gun doesn't necessarily mean a smaller caliber. The 229 has a slightly shorter barrel, so easier to conceal. You also have the Commander and Officer models of 1911 (Pro and Ultra in the Kimber line, for example) as options.

Wow, i was at the edge of my seat and my heart pumping as I read!
what a relive to know that you are ok.
I keep a CZ-82 9x18 Mak that i picked up for $150 in ea of my vehicles for that same reason.
My wife has yet to receive her plastic and sometimes the seat-belt blocks my holster. The CZ is within easy reach and with a 12rd capacity I should be able to reach my .40 cal before emptying the CZ.
Good situation awareness.
Thanks for sharing. Nice wake up!
