Although I'm not a Marine, but was Army, the film is all too real for me. The second part where Joker is sent "up north" to the Phu Bai/Hue area is one of the AOs I operated in. The sets are "exact," at least in my memory, of that area. My division (101st Abn) took over that AO after the Marines departed. Many of the firebases retained their Marine names (Sarge, Leatherneck, Fuller come to mind), and of course the well known Marine base Khe Sanh further north and west of there. It was an excellent film that depicted harsh "realities" of war IMHO.

I always wondered about the sets and scenes for the bombed-out ruins of Hue. I always pictured Hue as being much more Oriental/Medieval since it was the historic capital of ancient Vietnam and reputedly was much more historic than other more cosmopolitan locales in the south.

I don't think they were representing the Battle of Hue. More like the approaches to Hue in and around the Hue/Phi Bai area. Maybe it's just me, but the sets were very "familiar" for that area.

In any case this thread is about R. Lee Ermey. I think the commercial is the best one GEICO has made. The only one that makes me laugh out load EVERY time I see it "rlol"

I still think the caveman on the Time Bandit commercials are pretty funny, too.

Speaking of R. Lee Ermey, though, did anyone see him in Purple Hearts? He had some classic lines in there as well.
