Not taking anything away from the lady's bravery, of course, I just found it interesting.
I thought her first shot was a hit and that was why the guy fell back.
After looking at your gif, it's still possible that when you're seeing the gun up at a 45 degree angle that could be from the recoil of the first shot.
EDIT: Her hands and the gun are all a complete blur in the first frame, so I can't tell if she was ever on target before where you see the gun at a 45 degree upward angle.
EDIT EDIT: Going back to the original video, I dont' see any place where it looks like she's on target before you hear the first shot. I understand that audio and video don't always sync up on these things. It looks like she draws and points the gun up and brings it back down to the target. None of the "punching straight out" that we're taught. But either she's got a really wild draw and shoot technique that I wouldn't trust if I were the hostage, or else you're right and she fired her first shot up into the air.
