This cartoon was too ill conceived to waste any time on. It speaks for itself.

You're looking at the content of the cartoon logically. I wouldn't be so sure it was ill conceived. It links two different emotional triggers to create a negative association about guns and gun owners. Logic and truth are irrelevant to this technique. This kind of stuff isn't intended to induce thoughtful people or gun owners to change their minds. Whatever the author's intentions it serves to create a negative emotional association among people with unformed views along the lines of "guns are bad and people who support gun ownership are selfish and stupid."

Messages like this live within a larger context. These kinds of messages are pervasive in the mainstream "news" media, television shows, and movies and get whatever power they have by repetition and emotive association. So the general context is that the media is this country is relentlessly anti-gun and anti self-defense and has been for at least thirty years.

My guess is that Toles doesn't think much of guns or a free market.

Thanks that clears that up a lil.

However, he still uses the "guns and butter" analogy wrong and it still makes him look like an idiot.

Agreed, although that cartoon isn't really worth the time it takes to make a comment about it.
