Just read a news story about this and they called it a campus shooting. Geez. Just because the police station is near the campus doesn't mean it was a CAMPUS shooting. All the more reason to allow campus carry, IMO.
Glad no one was hit by the stray bullets that supposedly struck one of the college buildings, and glad they don't have to worry about the taxes associated with incarcerating the shooter and paying for his trial. Sheesh.

For what it's worth I sent an email to the authors of the Dallas Morning News article, pointing out that their article says the shooter was armed with an "assault rifle". She replied with the definition of an "assault-type weapon", and I just responded back that her article says "assault
RIFLE", not "assault-type weapon".
I know it's probably pointless...

Wearing a bullet-proof vest?

It didn't work, did it?

Would be interesting to see if the individual purchased that at the Allen Gun Show this weekend. There is a vendor that sells older used vests at the shows, and he was at that event. There was a guy buying one when I was there on Saturday, and I pretty well remember what he looked like. Would be strange if it was the same person.

Just saw this on dallasnews.com

Apparently, the shooter's Facebook page has pictures of him with guns and sayings such as "I love guns more than toothpaste".
This will go a long way for promoting gun ownership.

If he's in the age group that's active on Facebook, it probably won't help the campus carry cause.

That would be very strange. I am sure his picture will be posted soon.

One week earlier, and I would have been less that 50 yards from him. Spooky.

I attend Collin College and I am VERY familiar with this area. It's on the North side of the McKinney Campus (they have several), and it's right next to the fire training building and a large parking lot. There is a semi-wooded area to the east of this building, providing some decent cover. I have driven past this building no less than 20 times in the past year.
This was obvioulsy a 'draw play' to see how many firefighter and police students he could get a crack at.
His range must have been 50-100 yards max, and he positioned the vehicle/trailer to gain the best angle.
I have seen the police/fire cadets in the main building many times, it's only 50 meters from the shooting range building. I even asked once if the range was open to students, and got the 'not for civilians' answer.
Will the TX legislature get off their butts and allow CHL on campus NOW?

MojoTexas wrote:It will require legislation (in the form of a bill) in order to make any changes to the existing law. I agree the changes should apply to all schools, not just colleges and universities (although I'd be happy with that as a start). Technically "campus" just means the grounds of a university, college, or school. Even an elementary school could be considered a campus. Therefore I stand by my statement that we need a campus carry bill.

But, unless there is a school sponsored event going on we already can carry on the grounds. IIRC, the campus bill will allow us to carry in the buildings and was worded to only include schools above the high school level. It would be nice if it included all levels, but I don't think that's what was coming down the pike.

I would suggest not mentioning this incident in any gun control debates, especially not campus related ones. The salient points (which is how we usually try to debate, as opposed to emotional issues) are that no concealed carry could have helped in this case and that he attacked an armed and defended position.
How good is your concealed carry weapon against a sniper at 50 yards? I don't place a lot of faith in my pistol shooting at that range, nor in my reaction times to an ambush from a sniper. Even if this was truly related to the campus instead of the police station near it, this is the kind of incident that cannot possibly help our case.
And one of our best arguments is how criminals look for victims who cannot defend themselves. Several rational points have been made about why BG's never hit police stations and military bases because the people can shoot back. Look at his primary target again. I am not sure this was suicide by cop, though I am confident he did not plan on surviving. But he clearly was not looking for unarmed and defenseless victims.

The news portrayed it as happening at the Police station, adjacent to the university grounds.. however the campus link made it sound closer. The helicopter video did NOT look like it was on campus.

What is important and still not answer, how the assailant was gunned downed, or is it a self-inflicted wound?
From the video report,

The shooter had intent to "detonate" his bomb truck in similar fashion to OK incident. The fire did not ignite the fertilizer. He opened fire and tried to run away. Most likely took his own life after being hit from returning fire from LEOs.

Absolutely CORRECT!!!!!

As I was reading the initial posts on this thread I was thinking to myself how this has nothing to do with campus carry and a CHL would have done nothing to help in this case. Then I read your post and think... AMAN BROTHER!
