My heart would have been up in my throat...
Oh, it would've scared the heck out of me. But I'd have done pretty much what he did and tried to play it off as no big deal. Pick it up. Conceal. Go on about my business. If people around me were looking panicked and grabbing their cell phone, I'd have gone in the direction of the exit and made a casual but fairly hasty retreat. If no one acted like it was a big deal, neither would I.

Unintentional failure to conceal is not an offense.
PC ยง46.035. UNLAWFUL CARRYING OF HANDGUN BY LICENSE
HOLDER. (a) A license holder commits an offense if the license
holder carries a handgun on or about the license holder's person
under the authority of Subchapter H, Chapter 411, Government Code,
and intentionally fails to conceal the handgun.
However, as Seamus said, people call the cops for squirrels in their attic.
:iagree:

I accepted the fact when I started carrying that someone might see my gun if the wind blows open my coat or shirt. It can happen. I too would just leave if I thought someone saw it and freaked. If stopped by the police I would explain what happened. Dont know what else you can do. I try to make sure my shirt stays down if its windy and just be mindful. I get more concerned with snagging a shirt or coat on something which exposes your gun. My son is 10 years old and naturally knows I carry. When he was about 8 years old we were in the check out line at the grocery store. Im paying and he is next to me but stumbled or something and smacks his head on the but of my covered pistol. "OWWWW DAD! I hit my head on your gun!" he proclaimed. I literally just facepalmed right there. The cashier just covered her mouth and giggled. I would have said it was my phone but no cell phone would sound like that if hit with your head. I smiled and left.

Perhaps that was just his way of putting "Your 2nd Amendment is showing" into an appropriate context?

Wow, I can see this is going to be a cultural adjustment for me when I move to Houston. Open Carry is legal in Ohio, so most concealed carriers don't sweat it if they reveal their handgun. I usually carry IWB with my tucked in shirt bloused out over my grip, but sometimes I just wear it IWB with my shirt fully tucked in and the grip out in the open.

Back to the original topic, even when I have the grip showing on my handgun, I can spend an hour shopping at the grocery or Walmart without a single person even noticing it. Most people are sheep walking around in Condition White and utterly clueless. I never worry about someone noticing when I have it properly concealed (and that is with a full 5" 1911).

Got me thinking ... :headscratch One of values of this forum to me (being a new CHL'er) is being prepared (as much as I can) for various 'carrying' scenarios. Thanks for all the posts.

A lot of people on this forum make Houston sound like some kind of lawless free-fire zone.

Unless you associate with drug dealers or live in Section 8 housing, it is a perfectly normal large city. Someone plunked down there blindfolded would not know whether he was in Los Angeles, Phoenix, or Orlando.

The former DA was a jerk, but he went down in flames.

Actually, it is a perfectly normal city if you do associate with drug dealers or live in Section 8 housing. People who do that kind of thing know what to expect.

I thought he was talking about the need to be extra careful about concealment. :headscratch

I've made the same adjustment traveling in open/concealed and concealed-only states. I worry a lot less about concealment where open carry is legal than in Texas. Conversely, I worry a lot more about concealment in places where even concealed carry is illegal. Different environments, different concerns.

I worry this much: ><

I have stood in front of and talked to literally hundreds of law enforcement officers, the police chief, two sheriffs, the DA, and several judges while wearing my hardware. None of them gave me a second look.

Load up, cover up, shut up.

:iagree: Jim. Those last six words really say it all. You might add "and stop worrying!"
