The old addage practice how you fight comes to mind. I think for the legal ramifications there is nothing exception about using an edged weapon to defend yourself vs a firearm. The criminal code I am familiar with does not differentiate methods of lethal force, it simply states lethal force.

If there's one thing those pictures I googled have guaranteed, There will be no talking down someone coming at me/robbing me/otherwise threatening me with a knife. They're getting shot. No Hesitation.

Yep. Without hesitation. A knife can be a terrible weapon. Imagine bayonet wounds back in the day.

I've seen a few myself but I've also seen some reeeaaallly messy gunshot wounds. The stopping issue would be what concerns me, when one is being trained on using knives tactically , they are taught not to cut a throat as you see in many movies (noisy and unreliable) but to come across and down behind the clavicle hitting the sub-clavian and possibly disrupting the aorta. Not only is this a first strike tactic but even when performed perfectly you have to be prepared to maintain control while muting the enemy for upwards of 30 seconds. This of course assumes perfect stealth in the first place.

You can barely see the scar from a cut thirty years ago that is on my forearm but I can tell you, I still cringe when I ponder the possibilities. Nah, a knifes not for me...I am not half the proximity fighter I was thirty years ago and we are talking very close proximity.
