To add to MAR's comment - I am thinking any animal used for guardian purposes needs to be raised as that - with their "flock or herd", and not with people. They say LGD's (livestock guardian dogs) should be put out with the flock and left there, not treated like pets to be effective. When we first got the donkey he was much more protective of the pasture. But as he has gotten used to our dogs and the neighbors even though they aren't allowed in the pasture, he is less protective. Which is why I think when the coyote came blasting through after my chickens the other day he never stopped chewing his hay... He is sweet, but can live up to his name. Just another couple cents from my brain!
