Possibly a dumb question, but how do you tell if a Glock is a Gen 4 vs Gen 3?

Not dumb at all.

From a little distance away, you can tell by the magazine release. It's bigger on the Gen 4. Close enough to see the writing on the slide, it actually says "Gen 4" on the left side.

Is this true for all models or just the G17? I have three Glocks, and have no idea what generation they are (guess I never really looked very closely). I would buy a G17, but I bought my G19, G21, and G26 in that order and it would be bad karma to break the pattern by going backward in numbering. Next one needs to be a G27 or greater.

I believe only the Gen 4s are marked in this fashion.

I think you already broke the pattern.....you forgot the G23
